p.1 #1 · leica d-lux 4

Hi everyone, just wondering what you guys think about the leica d-lux 4. Is it realy as good as people claim it to be?

I saw this website:

http://www.boxedlight.com/dlux4/

Thanks for the opinions in advance!

Adam

I'm not sure the few changes d-lux 4 has from the LX-3 warrants such a price. Do a little search on this forum because I'm sure this little cam has come up more then a few times

Take care!

Adam,

I had the D-Lux 3 and the D-Lux 4 blows it away. Better in every respect. IQ, DR, Macro is great... only thing that is a bit different is there is not as much zoom as the DL3 had... but other than that, to me, the cameras are almost night and day.

Well, availability is a big advantage. No one has the LX-3 in stock, aside from shady Brooklyn shysters whom you would not want to share your credit card information with. I fell in love with the LX-3 when I saw it at B&H the other day, but when I tried to order it, they told me that no one on the Eastern Seaboard had one in stock. Apparently, no one on the Western Seaboard does either. So I bought the Leica.

The differences? The Leica looks way cooler. It also has a longer warranty (2y), and apparenty (not speaking from experience), the JPEG compression is a bit better. Also, the Leica ships with PhaseOne for RAW processing.

Otherwise, I imagine the hardware is quite similar, as is the performance. So far, I am very pleased with the camera. It's not going to replace my dSLRs, but the functionality and control the camera gives you is most impressive. Auto ISO with limits, usable high ISO, an f/2 (at the wide end) lens, RAW capability, IS, full manual controls, AE/AF lock, a separate AF button, the ability to use external hot-shoe flashes and Pocketwizards... all in a very lightweight and attractive package. The ability to turn off all of the annoying sounds, keep the flash from interfering with photography, spot meter, move the AF point around, view the histogram in realtime, and deactivate the AF assist lamp are also major pluses in my book.

Disadvantages? The manual controls are more cumbersome than they would be a on a comparable dSLR. The f/2 lens doesn't give you exceptionally shallow DoF, given the small size of the sensor. Also, the lens housing is large enough that the camera is impossible to stuff comfortably into a pant pocket.

In my limited time with it, though, I really like this little camera. I will be using it in a studio setting tomorrow with my Profoto strobes, so I am curious to see how it will do vis-a-vis my primary SLR camera.

I didn't know you were an FMer Jim. I really admire your work. Almost thinking about not getting a new Nikon lens and thinking about trying out the dlux4.

Thanks for the info Arka. It seems like the dlux4 is an awesome camera... if only it were a hundred bucks cheaper. *damn you red leica logo!*

I just miss doing simple photography. Back a few years I'd just bring my P&S and start taking pics with my girlfriend (whom is my wife now). Then I got into dSLRs and now I'm being pulled down by gravity...

Thanks again guys!

No opinion on the camera but I have to say: Great photos!!! I used to have the D-lux 3. The 16:9 is really nice.

I first wanted the LX-3 , but could not find it anywhere and after a lot of research (and Jim's site) decided on the Lux..
I plan on getting the brown leather case , looks classy!

Update: mine just arrived and I shot a few around the house (why is it always raining when new gear comes?) My first impression is ...well, I now am in Leica Lust!! I think it's a keeper!

I agree on the case, Susi! Hope to see some shots soon - when the rain clears. I am still waiting on the rain and wind to clear at the same time I am off of work so I can play with a new lens! I always thought this just happened to me

I'm not here often but check in every now and then.. right now I am in Monterey, California getting ready to go shoot Big Sur and other points of interest with the DLO4, M8 and the DP1.

A friend of mine is driving up from LA to meet me and then we are going to Camera West to oooh and ahhh over Leica glass...

Do you use a tripod a lot with your shots Jim? Just wondering. The picture you took of those trains in the available light seemed impossible to do handheld.

Great work as always!

I just ordered the leather case. Heard it comes with a wrist strap, anyone know where we can get an LCD cover to fit?
Got the battery for the LX-3 as it was a lot less

Some great images Jim.

I must admit as I get older the thoughts of a carry around compact gets more and more tempting (not for everything but with summer coming up, long walks in heat with any DSLR and a few lenses + the acc`s , water bottle etc)

Trouble is that I have tried a number of compacts (and not so compact) and although some of them provided image quality for A3 prints I`m still looking for one that can give me a 50Mb 8bit file for stock work.(up rezzed of course) not just now and then but anything I shoot and want to use and that is where the compact camera falls down everytime. I can sell prints direct myself from almost any digital camera that I`ve owned but submitting for stock libraries is something different.
If you shoot for sale there is never a time when you carry a camera as a maybe! and I suppose that is the crux of the matter really " no pain no gain"
Maybe one day soon there will be a breakthrough in technology and we will have a lens built into our spectacles with a wireless feed to a pack in our pockets the size of a pack of gum:-)

If anyone wants to share a raw landscape from the Leica or Panasonic that will upsize to 50Mb 8 bit and get past the scrutineers I`d be first in line at the dealers.

BTW my G9 has been able to creep a few through the net but in reality they were on a wing and a prayer to be honest.( I certainly wouldn`t buy them:-)

Here`s hoping!

Dave

I too wanted a leica but settled on an Lx3, amazon had a few in stock on thursday/friday, it's coming this Tuesday. I say settled because at least the lens on the panasonic is a Leica!

I think they are basically the same except for the styling, warranty, and included software. They are impossible to get a hold of though. I just checked Amazon, and they are up to $700.. same as the Leica!
