Bought a D5000 so I could have a backup to my D300 that I could leave in the car without feeling completely paranoid about losing $3k+ if I got broken into, but when I got it home and unboxed, er.... the box was empty. Called Best Buy back completely furious, it turns out they had unloaded mine as the floor model, so I ran back and got another copy. Unboxing pics and a few test shots will follow....

Edit: Unboxing shots now up here:

Box didnt feel light? You're lucky they admitted to being wrong or you would have had to prove it was empty to begin with.

I thought about that too but then remembered how heavy the manual packs are these days. If you weren't thinking about that added weight, it could possibly feel like there was a camera in the box. However, you'd think any camera salesman worth his salt would check out the contents and possibly even verify that the box and camera serial numbers match. But, then again, this was BB.

nothin really impressive on the D5000, im hoping Nikon gives us more with the D400 than a swivel screen and video.

I'm ashamed to admit that I like the swivel screen! I have it on my old Lumix FZ-50 and it is fantastic! I find that shooting candids is much easier (head doesn't have to point in the same direction as the camera).

I'm a Lr user so I can't edit my raws with that yet, and it seems my card reader won't take in SDHC cards, so I am gonna have to get a new one of those tomorrow. Trying to figure out View NX now and see if the capture NX I got with my D300 will work D5000 files.

I like the rotating viewfinder but agree the canon side mount wound be better.
I hate not having two command dials
I still hate the small form factor, which is why I skipped the Drebel and went to 20D and over to D300 when I swapped sides. It IS very light tho and balances well with the 18-200
Movie mode will have to play with outdoors tomorrow. I can't wait to see how it works on the Osprey nest monday.

More soon.

Here's a couple Raw NEFS for you guys to play with, nothing special since I was just hacking around the house and because the Nikon Software blows so completely:

It looks like there is a seal over the box's lid. Does Nikon do that to all boxes now? Thats a good thing.

Why should you be ashamed? Part of photography is a great angle. Swivel screens make it easy to experiment with odd or uncomfortable angles.

I had (actually, have - but it hasn't been turned on in several months) a Sony DSC-F717 with the swivel body. What a sweet way to approach photography: even better than a swivel screen, because the egronomics of the camera don't go to hell when you're holding the camera at a weird angle. I wish they'd produce a modern F717, like the 828 but without the purple fringing, and with a larger sensor.

I love the swivel finder, too. It gives me good way to shoot kids from waist level like an old TLR.

They did in the R1.The lens alone was worth it. Amazing how things go 360 degs. Great camera, a littel ahead of it's time. Now the manufacturers are falling over themselves trying to make a large sensor camera (albeit with interchangeable lenses).

The F717/ F828 Olympus c-7070/ C-8080, Canon Pro 1, G6, Nikon 8800/ 8400 are great cameras. Pity they are gone.

I'm not a ham, those are pictures from Trenton Computer Festival in Ewing NJ (still going on today if interested) and there is a computer flea market where you can buy tons of old computer and comms crap. I just liked the way that shot looked.
