Strong set and looks like the workshop worked well. Some very similar shots from MA but it's how we all learn is to imitate. Enjoy your strong fg subjects and the Mono shot doesnt bother me as much as others. Maybe darken the water a bit but I dont mind the brighter fg...but that's more my style and I've taken some crit for it too ;-) Nice sunburst...proving the 16-35 is worth the extra money :-P

These are all great images, Alan.

#1 Looks like a painting. I like it.
#2 I like the distant glow you caught on the mountains.
#6 My choice for best. The drama you caught here with the clouds and the dead snag are perfect IMO.

Hi, Alan.

Very nice set. My favorites are #1 and #6. #6 provides a bit more of uniquenss compared to the first. But, they are both lovely.

I also enjoy the colors in #2. I may stand alone on this, but I find it very interesting.

I travelled along 395 last April from Ridgecrest up to the Mono Lake area and back. I really enjoyed the variety of scenery and beauty it provided, and would like to get back there again.

Nice work on these.

Cheers,
Ed

Since you invited honest & brutal, allow me to be honest. (read: in my very subjective opinion.)

#1 - I really like, in fact I like it better than the vertical version I'd seen of Marc's. This feels much more balanced, and the lighting and processing look very nice and natural. Superb on all accounts except one, that I'd add a little bit more density, contrast, and darkness to the FG, as the small evergreens seem to be lacking definition here.

#2 - Sorry, but for me, this just feels way way wrong in terms of post processing colors and saturation.

I think you provided some good comments to the OP and I agree with your #1 sharpness assessment. I think #2 could be either post-twilight or pre-dawn and it's believable to me (for a long'ish exposure). I generally like them both though.

Regarding the #3 contrail comment... you do know these can take *hours* to go away, right Doesn't necessarily seem feasible in the context of a class....

#4. Regarding the lumpy rock. It's hard to see these things with "amateur" cameras like the 5d/5d2, D700, etc....If only more photographers would learn to appreciate 100% VFs. Any way, I don't find the rocks as unappealing as you and still like the shot. I also don't find any problems with a 4 stop NDG (though I'd stop at 3 too).... It looks so much better than any fakey-fakey HDR shot...

#5 and #6 don't do much for me. Your comments are valid, but as they are they'd never escape from the hard disk...

Boring? Not hardly!!
I like all the comps very much. The 1st is my fave, with the 3rd very close, from pp and lighting aspects. Beautiful images!!
The GND effect is the only thing that hurts the others for me. I think this agrees with the others.....when the fg, or ground, is brighter than the sky, the lighting just feels off, somehow, and is the main reason I rarely use 'em, and only 2-stoppers at that.
Having said all that, these are still quite enjoyable. Of course, I love all things Eastern Sierra and the high desert!!

Contrails, hours.... yes & no. Sometimes hours, sometimes minutes, depending on wind and atmosphere conditions. Personally, when I teach out in the field, I see that as a great real-world learning experience along the lines of, "Ok, there's a contrail there. Now what do we do about it? What are your choices? What decisions do you need to make to deal with this 'obstacle', and still create a powerful and meaningful image?"

In this kind of case, I'd usually ask my student, what is it you like & don't like, i.e. do like th FG, don't like the contrail. This is the exact type of problem the landscape & nature shooter must deal with, one that demands a solution, lest you come home with a nice image, but one with a huge contrail in it. The solution involves re-examining and re-assessing the scene, and usually moving, or changing lenses or perspective...something.

Agree on your point about the 100% field of view Viewfinders - but that's what's so awesome about digital, you can check your shot and composition with a push of a button. "Edge checks" should be one of the first things put into the learning photographers arsenal. Except in really fast moving or fast changing situations, taking a quick look on the screen will help you see things that you miss(ed) in the viewfinder.

Submitted respectfully.

Cheers,

Gary Crabbe

Beautiful work! I'll have to take a look at these on my Mac, as the colors on my work PC probably don't do these justice!

The entire series is very nice. #2 has some color issues, but all in all I rather like them very much. All other issues would be very minor. I am ok with the Contrail, its part of what happens out there. Not one of the "all trace of mankind has to be eliminated" crowd.

Hi Gary,

Thanks for your comments. I think regarding the Joshua Tree shot we were wandering all over the place and Marc told a few of us to get over and take a few shots of it. I took other shots of the Joshuas in Death Valley that I processed and are worthy of posting but I know there is a 6 pic/post rule that I didn't wanna violate. I didn't know Marc had processed the same one until u mentioned it. I looked at his b&w rendition and it does appear to be the same. Regarding the contrails, I saw it after the shoot but it didn't bother me.

Regarding the lumpy rock, It didn't bother me as well. In fact I didn't even know it was there until you mentioned it.

Thanks everyone for your comments.

I like these a lot! The first is fabulous.

The second, just a little too blue, but love the comp.

4 is pretty cool.

Like the others too.

I bumped these because of those bashers of that guy (we all know who) and that idiotic website that made mention of your GREAT work!

Killer shots. Keep moving forward in the face of sometimes apparent adversity.

Mark

For me there can't be enough shots from these locations.
My favourite of the bunch is #1 very closely followed by #2.
Well done.
