The group over 2k is rather small, reserved for the likes of unique lenses like:

Contax Zeiss 85/1.2
Contax Zeiss 50/1.2
Leica 15/2.8
Leica 35-70/2.8
Leica 180/2 APO
Some converted Contax N lenses

I'm sure I've missed a whole bunch but what I'm trying to get at is please narrow your request, are you looking for lenses to use on Canon or Nikon? Define "best", and specify some focal lengths you're after.

Just about every alt lens apart from the ones Thrice listed are below 2000. What criteria to set for "best" lens? I paid less than 2000 for my noct nikkor, but most go for more than 2000. What is the point of this excessively broad question? It seems like a troll post to get clicks on your website link....

The question is a little broad, yes, but these are my constraints. I think paying more than 2k for a good lens is too much. I'm looking what to try next. I got the 35L, 85L, 135L, voigtlander 125mm, and sigma 50mm, all after reading info on this forum. I'd like to make the question more specific, but I have no constraints other than the price. It's a hobby after all, and there are many directions I could take. I was thinking I should get the TS-E 90mm next, or the ZE 21mm when it starts shipping.

Where did you find the noct nikkor for less than 2k?

You have a super line up already. For wide the Zuiko 18/3.5. The 90 TS-E is one of the few Canon lenses I regret selling. Along with the 35L...
You seem to have dodged the Rokkor 58/1.2. It is a very very fine lens.
Like me you seem to have no need for longer lenses. Is this correct?

For what body?

The TS-E 90 is indeed superb... just get it if you are interested in T/S. The 45 ain't bad either. If you buy used the pair will be below $2000. These are the only two Canon lenses that I have used and actually *love*. (They kind of count as "alt" lenses IMO).

Off ebay - lucky with the auction I guess - 1150 euros or so. You have a stunning collection of lenses - canīt imagine what you really need unless you simply want to try different stuff. A 58 Rokkor or Oly 18 seems to whisper your name somewhere, though.

I'm sorry, I meant my post to indicate that the group above 2k is so small that the group below 2k is truley immense and his category needs to be refined.

I have a 5d mk2 and d40 (which I might sell now).

My understanding is that Rokkor 58/1.2 and Noct Nikkor 58/1.2 have exactly the same design, but the Nock Nikkor has better glass for night use.

I think I'll start keeping my eyes open for a Noct Nikkor

They are both certainly great lenses, but the only thing they have in common is the fact that they have 7 elements.

How about the Oly 24 shift? Better than the Canon TS-E, under $2k (I have one to sell for say $1750), superb optically.

Save up an extra $2 to 500.00 each and go for the almost alt 17 & 24II TS-E's - last info I've read is May 09' availability - next month. You can use them with a 1.4x - soooo - its' like having two lenses to justify that extra $$$. The Summilux E60 50mm might be found for less than $2000 if you look around.
