p.1 #1 · Any Leica 50/1.4, Minolta 58/1.2 comparison samples?

Anyone had experiences with both of these lenses? What are your thoughts?

I had an opportunity alittle while ago to try these but on different bodies on different nights. This is what I got.

Canon EOS 5D + Leica 50mm ƒ/1.4 Summilux-R

Sony á900 + Minolta 58mm ƒ/1.2 MC Rokkor PG

I was thinking of finding one to convert to Sony mount but they seem to be a bit pricey for an unproven experiment.

Which Leica Summilux-R? There is the E60 which is the latest. The previous version had an E55 front filter (introduced 1978) and there was a version even prior to that (1969-1978).

The E60 was released in 1998 so the lens you are using is the previous, E55, version. Very nice.

the lux's that I have used, not sure which version, but with longer throw of focus ring and a bit less focus dicerning range, it was to hard to get acurate focus, but it was barely so. Get whichever you can afford. FWIW I sold my leica and got a minolta, fully converted to canon for 550.

well, yea, it was the type 2 E55. it belonged to my friend who said the e60 does not clear the mirror or doesn't fit properly. Not that I would spend $2,000 on a lens.

thanks for the comments, but are there any comparison samples? Or even on the Leica 50/2.0 SummicronR ?

I got the Minolta for about $350 and $50 converted to Sony last summer and really like it. But I really like some shot samples of the Leica's I've seen on Flickr and how they draw images and was wondering how big a difference there is of the two/three lenses in direct comparison.

Very very cool!
The Summilux bokeh reminds me the Zuiko 55/1.2 pattern. Not good for my taste. I prefere rounder drawings, like Rokkor (or Nikkor-Noct - drool )

Thanks for the info, and congrats!

I think I like the bokeh of the Leica a bit more. Though they are both kind of jarring. I'm sure both lenses are nice and it's probably 6 of one, half a dozen of the other.

yup. already have. unfortunately there are not that many Leica R users that post to flickr...

i can't kill this lust for converting a Leica. I suppose I'll just have to eventually do it and post my results here.

Thanks again.

The scene is at Avenue and Bloor, isn't it?
I have the both lenses, you can try them again.

I saw some bokeh comparisons between a Summilux vs. Summicron and both seemed to be nicer 1/2 stop down from wide open (they are both very very sharp at these apertures). Personally, I think the Summicron is probably the nicest 50... at least for it's speed... and from what I've seen, it is more pleasing than the 'lux at the apertures that I am more likely to shoot... I was thinking about picking up a 'lux for a while... not even thinking about it any longer... the 'cron is so nice and fitting my needs... cheap too!

Yes, yes it is. It's right at the northwest corner of Yorkville Avenue & Avenue Road. Good eye.

You have 50/1.4 & 50/2.0 ? or 58/1.2 ?

I guess I would be more interested in hearing your thoughts about the characteristics of each of your lenses rather than trying out ur $$ lenses.
