p.8 #1 · Your 1D Mark III after the fix

After testing and adjusting a couple of days with test-charts and 'real live' situations, here are my conclusions.

It is a night and day difference before and after the last adjustment by Canon in a positive way.
The centre focus point is always spot on in ai-servo and one shot. The same conclusion on the outer points! But here is a huge difference using F4.0 lenses. It's obvious that this camera is made for F 2.8 and bigger apertures. That's were the benefit of the cross sensors appears. The outer AF-points are only cross-sensors using F2.8 or lenses with bigger apertures. With F 4.0 lenses you need much more contrast to focus spot on with the outer AF-points. That's something to keep in mind testing your mk III. But anyway, this is only the case in very difficult situations in low light.

I'm amazed by the results!

When the sun appears over here, I hope I can show you some results of birds in flight soon.

Kind regards,

Bas

I send in my 2 mk3 2 weeks ago. in 3 day's I recieved them back.
after the fix: working about 2 weeks, 1 1D [ the oldest 50xxxx] had about 4x a 99 error.
before the fix I never had 1 error 99 on my 2 body's. [ may 2007]

the newer one [53xxx] its spot on better as before.

Well I got my 1DIII back on Friday and tested this morning under very difficult backlit high contrast lighting conditions (where mine performed very poorly in the past) and it perfomed splendidly. I tested mostly the extreme outer focus points in Servo and consistently it focused well on fast moving subjects at close distance all at around F2. While I haven't tested enough yet, this is very encouraging!

Quick question: Do you just call Canon to send in your Mark III or does the recall only affect certain serial numbers? Sorry, I'm late in all of these.

Well this is depressing. I was hoping every body would still have big problems so I wouldn't have to consider getting the 1D III. All this talk of working AF has made my wife very nervous.

Since they fixed mine so easily with no parts I'm thinking there was some kind of issue with their calibration equipment from the start, and that's why results would vary in the field so much. They really seem to have it figured out now, though. I hope yours, and Emile's end up working as well as mine. If they do, then you will be very happy.

Hey Mark, what SN was your camera if you don't mind me asking?

Pure placebo effect I'm 100% certain. I remember hearing the same things about the 1D MK2N vs the MK2 (when they used the exact same aa filter, sensor, digic processing for raw images).
Just like with the MK2(N), if there was an improvement in ISO with this update, Canon would make damn sure you knew about it.
However, if the images are focusing better, and are sharper, that could give the illusion of less noise (since noise appears more prominently in out of focus areas)

I had my 1D Mark 3 service at canon in VA and it still stinks in servo!

The attached photo is shot with a 200 f2is@ f2, bright sun, at 1/8000th.

What gives? The focus point was on the girl's face!

I notice the lower sidewalk is in focus.

Could it be front focusing that much?

That sucks for whatever the reasons are... should be a easy subject to shoot..

And yes, it's front focusing, any MA for this lens ? if so reset it to ZERO may help...

Yes, should be super easy.

I did not micro adjust because with one shot, its spot on!

ok, let me know when you are selling the 200/2.0L IS...

Seriously, do some controlled test shots, if the problem is still there, call Canon and send them in..

Good luck !

That was really useful and showed real sensitivity.

Seriously, engage Canon technical support. Its a tough to switch to the other side. You have to completely reequip and you have either an ethical dilemma of dumping your nonfunctional 1D3 or writing of ~ $4k.

Good luck. If maverick666 were really serious, I'd sell it to him and make it his problem.
