So a friend of mine who just got a hand-me-down D70s from his dad picked up a much needed fast prime today, the new 35/1.8G DX which went on sale last night in Japan. It is $300 here, which is insane because it sells for $100 less in the states. I took a few test shots with it on my D700 and it is really superb. No visible vignetting for close shots, but a ton at infinity. At least as sharp wide open as the 35/2D. It really doesn't focus any faster than the 35/2D on my D700, but it is completely silent, gasketed, and internal focusing with FTM. It comes with a small bayonet hood and soft case here. For $200 new this thing is a must buy for anyone who doesn't have already have the 35/2D and has a 1.5x Nikon camera.
Here are 3 quick snap-shots from his D70s that I took. All at f/1.8:
I'll post a few examples from my D700 in a few hours when I have a chance to pull them off my CF card.
Old boy at kitamura lied to me....he said not till end of the month just last Friday. Chris, your boy is slipping . Man why's the price gotta suck here....guess I'll wait for a US order Can still trial it, always a good thing. Course today I didn't bring the camera so I could just do it on the way home.
Probably a good thing though, I usually buy after trialing.
Man I wish they would've came out with a full frame version. I certainly would have paid the premium! Any chance we can see these in B&W? I kid! Nice shots.
if a DX lens already looks like this on FX, why didn't they made it FX in the first place? Will it really be so much larger, heavier and pricier? I mean looking at these samples it's almost fx... Or am i missing something here?
Well it's great, i will get instant vignetting so i don't have to add that in post....
looks great. Im definitely picking up one. And im sure those who say they'd pay a premium haven't read the numerous threads on it. I dunno about you But im not paying $1600 for a 35 prime, but thsts just me.
I suspect that it would be possible, with plastic finnish and the current glass quality to make it fullframe for maybe $400? Would that be unnacceptable? Well, anyway, looks like a great piece of dx-glass

Perhaps it really WAS an FX lens, then they saw that some one screwed up with the vignetting at infinity and decided to call it DX instead
