p.1 #1 · Sigma 18-200 hsm vs Nikon 18-200 vr

Hey everyone. My d40x should be here any day now. Has anyone done a comparison between the Sigma 18-200 hsm and the Nikon 18-200 VR ? It will be my 1st lens and 1st time shooting w/ a dslr. I am just wondering of the Nikon is worth the price difference over the Sigma.

Thanks for all your help. Lovin' this site.

I have the Sigma 18-200 OS and it is amazing. I have also shot with the nikon 18-200 and to be honest i cannot tell the different. I used my Sigma with my old D40 and it worked great every time. Now that i have upgraded to the D90 my life is even better and i just bought a Sigma 50mm 2.8f DG Macro and it will be here today! I say save the money and go with the Sigma you can find awesome prices at B&H and also Ebay where i got mine. Have a good one, and good luck!

according to SLRGear.com, the Nikkor is significantly better than its 18-200 competition.

It might be due to the HDR conversion (handheld?) but that shot is quite soft. Even more so considering it's downsampled.

Hey everyone.
It's time to buy, because in about 20 days leave for trip to Thailand, but I would need your own advice.

BACKGROUND

• I am not a photographer, I enjoy traveling to photograph anything more. The car will come out of the house 2 times a year, maximum 3!
• I'm going to look at the pictures with thousands zoom and crop to capture the extreme detail and the highest setting, I try still a good overall view of the shot.
• Do not print posters and photo albums to the max normal, but usually (95%) only to watch the video and publish on the Internet

OPPORTUNITY '

Camera: Nikon D90
Lens: Nikon 18-200 VR vs. Sigma 18-200 OS HSM .... other lens like best?

Everyone says the Nikon 18-200 is better, but consider my use of computers and ... Limited to 2 trips per year.
Sure that the Sigma lens is still a good choice, so it's not worth spending $ 250 more for the Nikon?
You will see the difference between a monitor images of the 2 lenses?

Thanks to all

The Nikon (or at least my copy of it) is miles better than anything offered by any other manufacturer in an 18-200. The Nikon's zoom creep is annoying, but the IQ is fantastic.

I had the Sigma 18-200 OS in EOS mount, really enjoyed it. I have shot some images with my daughter in laws Nikon 18/200VR-and did not like them, or in fact not heres that i have seen. Just my recent experiences. I used my D300 and her D300, with her lens, and really didnt care for the images with her 18/200 VR. Just my recent experience of course.

Isn't that what the new 18-200 is meant to address? Same optics and VR (though it is labeled VR II) but with a zoom lock feature so you don't have to worry as much about the zoom creep.

I think the Sigma is optically better from my use of both lens.

I love the Nikon 18-200. No superzoom has any business being this sharp, especially on the wide end. The VR works, and works well. The main weaknesses would be mediocre bokeh, and the zoom creep on the earlier production batches (my copy from early 2008 does not have much zoom creep). Sure, its not as sharp as a prime, but it is really MUCH sharper than the well-regarded Tamron 28-200 superzoom I used in the past. I would consider it a perfect travel lens on a DX body.

Thanks to all.
Hello Dave I wonder if you've used both lenses?
on Nikon?
and why it considers the best Sigma?

I've never used the Sigma (or Tamron) super wide-zooms so I can't compare. However, I did use my Nikon 18-200 on a two week long trip to China a few months ago and was fairly happy with the photos I was able to take. I hardly every changed lenses (I had a 50mm f1.8 with me also).

On a DX camera I will recommend to consider as well the new Tamron 18-270VC. The newer Tamron lenses have the build quality much improved than their old stuff... well it are still far from Nikkors but the price is very good and the quality of pictures is outstanding. I have the Nikon 18-200 but for travel I use a D5000 with this Tamron... In the bag I take also a 50/1.4 G for low light situations and Tamron 1,4 TC that works surprisingly well with the zoom on good light. This way I have a very light photo travel kit that is very flexible and protect my back :-)

One more thing: The VC from Tamron beats the VR from Nikon... the image is really freezing. The Sigma zoom I believe that does not have VR so this is a big handicap...

Great point!. That does make a difference-the Nikon 18-200 and the Sigma 18-200 are not exact comparisons since the Nikon is about a stop faster on the long end.

To me, the 5.6 on the Nikon is already a weakness on the long end because of mediocre bokeh. I can't image the Sigma to improve on that, given its 6.3 aperture on the long end.
