p.1 #1 · What is the World Record D2H shutter count

Hello all,

So I'm upgrading some of my gear but thought I would ask this question.

What is the record for highest shutter count on a Nikon D2H?

On the original shutter and meter, I have 1,283,000 actuations. Can anyone beat that?

Yessir! Oh wait, nope, you got me by two zeros... Mine was at a measley 25,000 when I parted with it. Just a pittance compared to your amazing count.

So... uh... you like the 8FPS burst huh?

dancers? (my imagination wanders off to try and comprehend what 1,283,000 pictures of cheerleaders would be useful for)

That is lots of shooting. How many keepers did you get? Video might be a cheaper option

That is 682 pictures a day, 365 days per year for the 5 whole years the camera has been available plus the 56 days this year including today. Restated thats over 1200 pictures for every working day a year. That really seems like a bit much, did it every smoke and groan.

I shoot NFL, NBA, AFL, soon starting on CIFL cheerleaders and dancers, plus tons of college football and basketball cheerleaders/dancers across the country. I began in 2002 shooting Illinois high school football, basketball, volleyball, gymnastics, but gave it all up for cheer and dance and haven't looked back since.

High school, universities and Sports Illustrated uses my stuff.

Keepers? >98%

My news site is Cheer Times and it has grown over the past two years. I plan on more expansion this year and next school year.

The Web site is operational while undergoing facelift (major redesign).

I'm purposely running this D2H into the ground just to see how far it can go. Started that experiment last August (current school year). Otherwise, I shoot three other Nikon bodies, including a D70 with over 800,000 actuations.

davenfl, thanks for the breakdown. Never would have come up with those numbers.

Hi,

But 1,283,000 actuations is a testament to the superiority of the Camera. Has the shutter mechanism ever been serviced before?

Perhaps this one specific and unique camera but not the D2H's in general, they and all other Nikon's have shutter failures and replacements at pretty normal factory predicted rates including mine.

A D70 with 800,000 clicks. Wow this is getting pretty unreal. So you are telling us that in the same period of time you shot millions of additional pics with other cameras. Thats about one picture every 15 seconds or so for 220 normal work days a year for 5 years. An a 98 percentage keeper meaning you have millions of images for sale. I really want to believe you but the facts and figures are far a field from anything I have ever heard of. To the shooting time you would have to add the processing time, it goes tilt in my head, more power to you.

If your referring to me the facts and figures speak for themselves, I am just trying to fit them into a reasonable model in my head.

I used to assist a major shooter and before i got him to switch to digital he had 2 F4 bodies and shot film for over 10 years with each of them. it was Normal to burn 50rolls a day sometimes 75 and he worked A lot. he was brutal on them too and they never balked at doing their job ever. All the time i was with him we broke some lenses , had some mishaps with film and some lab errors but the F4's they just did their job and all of it on the water in boats with heavy gyros attached and spray everywhere Daily. Salt and freshwater so this guys story mirrors my own experience with nikon and ruggedness

Jammy

this is not a record, i cannot remember where I saw it but there is an F5 out there with over a million of shots on it and this was a few years ago so it has more than that on it now as the guy was still firing away with it

Some had bad shutters on the F4s, which did not show up until after the film was processed. I never had more problems with a camera than the F4s. Bad flash circuits, bad rewind mech., etc. It was rugged, but not reliable for me. F5s were great though.

My world travel camera for 8 years was a lowly 6006. I have boxes and boxes of slides and prints from that camera; no idea how many actuations. Lot of time in marine environments. Dropped too many times to count and generally just kind of treated like a wallet; figured it would always work if it was handy. I am amazed at the build quality of the thing for a semi-pro camera. It was revolutionary at it's time though and the pattern for all Nikon prosumer DSLR's.

I hate to mention it, but there's a guy on dpr that goes by the name of PerfectPoms who is simply incredible with the amount of photos that he takes of his dogs. Last I recall, he went through a couple d70s, then a couple d2h's and is now working on a couple d2x's or maybe d3's by now......

Here's a post where he stated that he got 637,000 shots from the "original" shutter of his d2hs. I can recall seeing posts from him where he claimed to have shot well over 6k shots of his dogs during a walk in the park.

http://forums.dpreview.com/forums/read.asp?forum=1021&message=29954503&q=perfectpoms&qf=m

ah, just found a better one from him. He's a breeder for Poms and he says he shot over 15k on a Sunday shoot, with 1 d3 battery.

The guy's been doing this for at least 2 or 3 years that I can recall and is dead serious about his pup photography.

Good grief, you guys ask lots of questions to complement the horde of banter.

* Ok, reread the Subject line. I said "D2H", not an F5 film body.

* I don't know how this Upload feature works, but I uploaded a pic I took about a half hour ago. Check the shutter count.

* Servicing? No, none. Once I saw that I was abusing the heck out of the shutter, I wanted to see how far I could go with it. Put it to you this way with how I treat perishable goods. In 1988, I bought a new Pontiac Grand Am, first year that GM came out with the Quad-4 engine. Anyone remember it? In 1997, the thing finally died, with 349,000 miles on it. I wrote Pontiac a letter. Know what they gave me? I "Pontiac Excitement" keychain.

The shutter is original. The meter is original. Nothing on the camera has ever been serviced. The rubber on the CF door has fallen off. The top left dial is broken. The body is stuck in CH mode. I never ever shoot in A, P, or S mode, always M.

Not sure what else you guys are looking for.

I shoot editorial. Rarely, rarely do I sell photos to parents, cheerleaders or dancers.
