p.1 #1 · 4GB RAM Laptop - Woes - use 3,6 or 8 GB

Now memory for Laptops is available also in 4GB modules and 2 slots are generally provided I thought I'd try installing 3, 4, 6 and 8GB on a laptop and see what happens.

VISTA X64 3 GB OK Network access OK

Vista X64 Ultimate 4GB BSOD ( Failed with Blue screen on start up) Install from scratch also again fails in X64 Ultimate- not sure why this only occurs with 4GB RAM.)

X64 Home premium with 4GB same problem as ultimate.

Vista X64 6 and 8 GB OK, Network OK (Home Premium and Ultimate)

Vista X32 3,6,8GB all OK but maximum reported was 4GB. RAM disk of 4Gb is an option in using a 32 bit OS with > 4GB RAM.

Windows 7 X-32 3,4,6,8 all OK but max ram reported was 4GB RAM (as before use RAM disk for > 4GB Ram)

Windows 7 X-64 3,4,6,8 GB All OK but with 4GB RAM (only) No Internet connection -- Limited connectivity was possible. Connection was fine with other memory sizes than 4GB.
Network card used
via velocity familiy gigabit ethernet family.

So conclusion seems to be when using Microsoft 64 bit OS'es - both Vista and W-7 on a Laptop don't install exactly 4GB RAM in either 2 @ 2GB memory modules or a 1 X 4GB module. Go for 3 (1GB + 2GB), 6 (4GB + 2GB) or 8 (4GB +4GB)

Seems something strange happens when you choose exactly 4GB RAM. - Note of couse the shared Video might also effect the configuration but something very strange is happening in the 64 bit mode when you have exactly 4GB RAM.

Windows 7 (with Photoshop) absolutely FLIES with decent size RAM on a laptop - either W7 X32 with RAM DISC or W7 X64.

I have a feeling the problem is something to do with the ethernet card so if your laptop has one of the VIA VELOCITY cards in it you could experience problems -

Why Vista X64 fails with 4GB RAM but works with the other configurations is beyond me but there we are -- if computers were simple a lot more people would probably be out of a job.

BTW 4GB laptop modues are even cheaply available in "Rip off Britain" so you should be able to source these even more cheaply in the US etc.

1GBP approx 1.43 USD so 4GB RAM at UK price around 60 USD (inc TAX) -- I'm sure un the US it's cheaper.

Hi,

Thanks for posting this. Interesting to see how the memory size can interact with the SW versions like this.

Thanks.
