i'm not sure if these images fit into landscape or not I took these photos in Commonwealth park at the carrillion.
The Carillion was given to the city of Canberra in 1963 as a gift from Britain.

The third is my favorite and is composed quite well. The tree dominating such a large portion of the frame in the first two brings it into competition with the main subject. It's hard to tell if your intent was to photograph the tree or the monument. (We know it was the monument, but such is the effect of allowing the tree to dominate the scene.)
Thanks Bev , on reflection I can understand that the including or allowing the tree to dominate could confuse the viewer.
I had placed the tree there because of the position of the sun as it was mid afternoon and nearly behind the tree in an effort to get a better exposure.

What I try to do when in that situation (if I don't have a lens hood...and if I'm understanding you correctly) is to position myself in the shade of a tree or building, so that there is no sun hitting the camera. I know with the sun up high, it's not always easy to find that kind of shade situation.
