p.1 #1 · I was in the 9 car pile up this morning (Pics inside!)

As an aspiring photojournalist, I used what I had availvable to me (my iPhone camera) and documented my long day.

The following contains graphic images and please proceed with caution.

I took a lot of pride in having a lot of balance. I haven't fell down in over 10 years. I haven't fallen down any steps, over any curbs, not even ice could take me down. Well today that streak ended.

We knew the roads would be bad but still had to go to work. As we left our subdivison we saw what looked like a cemetary of cars along the main road. I knew I had to be careful.

After dropping off my son I got back on the outer road to avoid all of the traffic on highway 270. As I came over a hill at about 25mph I saw a few cars all over the street about 20 yards ahead of me. I stepped on the brakes a few times (don't have abs) and then I tried to accelerate out of the skid but it was too late. The car was out of control and there was no getting it back. I was able to see that there was a police officer assisting the drivers who had already crashed ahead of me. He looked at me, and I looked at him as I skid towards him. He hopped on top of a car as I smashed into one of the wrecked vehicles.

After a moment (about 2 seconds) of processing what just happened, I told my wife we had to get out of the car now. It wasn't safe to stay there but it sure wasn't safe to be standing around in the street.

I could see a lady in front of me screaming. Once I got out of the car I could hear her screams. I looked to my right and the cop was up and coming from behind the cars. I asked if he were ok and he said he may have broke his wrist. I helped my wife across the icy road into the grass. At that same time, the cop dragged the screaming lady from her car to the shoulder of the road. She had a leg injury. He had already gone back to the another wrecked car and I followed him to see if he needed help. He pulled a kid from a caviler and started to head towards the grass. I went to the car to see if there were any other children in that car and there weren't. So I helped the mother out of the car and got her out of the road. They were both ok.

Then I turned my attention towards the screaming lady on the shoulder. I knew it wasn't a safe place for her. I went to grab her and drag her off the shoulder and put her into the grass.

As I was doing that, a Kia van came over the hill and just like the 8 cars before him, he was out of control. He skid and rear ended my empty car.

That guy was fine.

I turned my attention towards a truck that had fallen into a ditch in the same area, and I headed over to see if anyone over there needed help.

And that is when the streak ended.

I started sliding down the icy driveway. And I thought to my self I need to get low and try to sit down so I don't fall. And the instant I had that thought, SMACK.

I went face first into the blacktop.

I got right back up and touched my head and saw the blood on my left hand. My first thought was, "Finally, I got the scar that I always wanted." My second thought was that I think I helped enough for one day.

Right about then, the fire dept. and tow truck showed up and started getting things in order.

Above is the cop that I ran over talking with a fireman.

My once flawless Crown Victoria Police Interceptor

Was now ruined and being towed away.

Right around then KMOV channel 4 showed up.

But I'm not really upset though. First and foremost everyone involved was ok. And the size of the Crown Vic was the reason why I got it. So I could hit stuff and not get hurt.

My mom ended up coming to pick us up. We took the Mother and child who I hit and helped earlier to their home. After that I went to the ER to get my first set of stitches.

And thats how the day ends. I was involved in a 9 car pile up,fell on my face , and got stitches.

Be careful out there everyone!

Don't you know that picture of the photog laying on the ground after being shot and he was still holding his camera. I wouldn't say I'm that extreme but I would like to think I have a 1/10 of the guts that poor guy had.

While we do not get enough snow down here in N. Alabama to worry about, when we do, we have those same problems. My advice, slow down. not trying to be critical, but 25 mph is too fast, especially when you can't see over a hill. Slow down and you will probably make it to where you were going.

Several years ago, I had the pleasure of driving in snow. My drive was 50+ miles one way, and there were several steep hills and sharp curves that I had to negotiate. With a lot of vehicles slid off the road onto the shoulder or into the median and several turned over onto their sides, I made it with only one problem, and that was a sideways slide on a 2-lane bridge after coming out of a sharp curve and down a hill at the same time. I made it off the bridge and back onto the road before I had a chance to hit the guardrail. After getting straight again, I met an 18 wheeler coming the other direction. We missed each other, but he was going way too fast for the conditions.

What I encountered on my drive included a delivery truck turned over onto its side in the median, a car up against a rock outcropping, several more cars on the side, in ditches, vehicles coming down a steep hill in the northbound lane. Some of them were turning around, and going south in the same lane. We (there were 6 of us in a Chevy Suburban) were going south, up the steep hill, in the southbound lane of the 4-lane highway that we were travelling on. I had one turn after getting on top of this hill, which was onto a two lane road. This road dead ended into the four lane. At this intersection, an 18 wheeler truck driver had tried to stop. He was on the 2-lane road going north and as he approached the 4-lane road, he had to stop. He slid through the intersection, and while he did make the left turn, he rolled the truck over.

Other than the bridge that I had issues with, our trip was uneventful. I had several bridges to cross, and several intersections to go through, one that required me to stop for a traffic signal. I anticipated the bridges by taking my foot off of the accelerator and slowing down even more, then coasting across the bridges. The intersection was handled the same way. I never spun my tires, never slid off of the road, just went diagonally across that one bridge, and only then because of the curve before the bridge. My speed never exceeded 25 mph, and I only got up to that speed when I could see a long way ahead. At bridges and intersections, I slowed down to around 15 mph, as a precaution.

If you anticipate any problems ahead, you should be fine, as long as you drive slow.
A co-worker once told me that if you don't know the road, then don't drive the speed. While you probably drive this road quite often, and you do know the road, you still did not know the conditions ahead. This applies to most people, and I will include myself in this too. I may have an accident tomorrow, but I will do everything in my power to avoid having one. That includes observing other drivers around me, and hanging back if they are weaving some. I pass only when I feel comfortable with the way they are driving, and then I get the pass over with as fast and safe as possible.

I'm glad that you did not get hurt worse than what you were. I would much rather arrive late, than be in an accident and not arrive at all. Please slow down when the road conditions get bad. Again, I am not being critical, even if it seems so. I apologize if it comes across that way, but my intentions are sincere. I give this advice to anyone willing to listen, simply because I see bad driving constantly when I am going to and am at work. By the way, I work for the Alabama Dept. of Transportation, and have done so for the last 30 years. I work on the roads, around paving crews. We have people speeding past us at 70+ mph, and we are standing less than 3' away from the traffic. One misstep on our part is fatal. By the way, the spped limit in the work zones is no more than 45 mph, and that is still too fast for you to stop if I or anyone else steps out in front of you, all because of a moments inattention. Do you want a fatality hanging over your head, just because you didn't want to slow down, or were talking on your cell phone, or playing with an IPOD, radio, or whatever. Please SLOW DOWN. Your life, and ours depends on it.

I am through with my rant now. Thanks for the photo essay. Maybe others will pay more attention to their driving in bad weather, as well as through construction zones, for what you posted, and for what I have had to say.

Regards, ALDOT, aka Colin

25 was 20 under. but apparently not slow enough. I don't think there would have been anything any one could have done to avoid that. But thanks colin for your feedback.

Just because the speed limit was 45 mph does not mean you have to go that fast. The fact that you were going 25 was good, but you could have gone even slower. Yes, I am nitpicking, but a slower speed may very well have prevented your accident. True, any speed may have resulted in the same result, but I do not think so. For example, when driving slow like you were, and you apply the brakes and you slide, then you are going too fast for the conditions. You can always slow down some more, unless you have already stopped , and in that case, you might as well walk.

Anyway, I am glad you are okay. I am not directing my comments just at you, Jerren, but at anyone who has gotten into a similar situation. We can all use a dose of reality to see where we goofed up. Hopefully, we will learn from that goofup, myself included.

Regards, Colin

Glad you are ok, black ice is deadly, I have been in a wreck because of it before as well. You don't see it till its too late and you are already skidding out of control. I was doing 25 or so, and ended up doing two complete 360's in my patrol car before going off into the grass. Again, glad you are ok.
