p.1 #1 · Getting Seen

One of my goals this year is to try and get into some print materials... magazines and such, as well a competitions. We've got a wedding being showcased in a North Carolina mag this year, but they came to me (because the weddings planner turned it in for consideration). I don't have the SLIGHTEST idea how to go about pulling information together for submissions. Does anyone have any advice? This is something I've never even tried to get off the ground in the past... we were always too busy getting the studio going.

In North Carolina, check out "Weddings Magazine". It's actually a freely distributed magazine and is located at the largest and most popular bridal boutiques - at least in the Triangle Area (Raleigh, Cary, Chapel Hill, and Durham). The nice thing is, it's targeted locally and distributed at almost all major expos here as well. When it comes down to it, the publication is excellent in quality and free for the bride - meaning she'll most likely take it home over actually paying 10 dollars for another magazine.

National Magazines will cost a lot more due to their publication area coverage. I know Cary Magazine does specials on North Carolina businesses and if you submit your story, they might feature you. As far as magazines go - it's pretty straight forward for the ad. You pick the size you want, b/w or color, design it, submit a pdf, and pay for it.

We'll be in Southern Bride and Groom Magazine out of Raleigh. I'll look into the other one.

Maybe I'm more interested in print competitions. So far, the only ones I know about are the ones where you need to be in the club... PPA and WPPI and the like. Maybe I need to break down and join one. *sigh*

Hey Mel. Concerning magazine submissions I've talked with several friends in the industry about them and here are the commonalities I've found:
-The wedding must be submitted by the bride or the planner.
-It helps if you're willing to trade for advertising.
-It helps to know someone, or know someone who knows someone.
-The bride and groom must have a compelling story ie. long distance, military, celebrity, met in a foreign country, etc.
-The wedding has to be swank, the couple has to be beautiful and the images should be above average.
With all of that being said, I'm sure you guys have a few every year that would be worthy of submitting as long as the bride will help with the submission. I've got one or two this year that I am really going to push and try to get published. The key is to get the bride excited about it and they'll be totally game. Good luck Mel, keep rockin' in 2009!
