p.1 #1 · 580ex1 problem - anyone else?

No matter how I set the switch in one of my 580s it only functions as a master. I can't get the slave function or the off function. Any ideas and if it needs out of warranty repair where should I send it?

Like most complex electronics if it doesn't work normally its probably broken. Canon has a flat rate for flash repairs (about $125 last I heard) so repair will not be too expensive.

You don't need to call, just package very well in a plain brown box and ship to Canon with a detailed letter and your contact info: name, address, phone and e-mail. Ship via courier with tracking or get a USPS return receipt for piece of mind. Canon will contact you via e-mail when they recieve the item. If they need to charge you for the work they will e-mail.

Before sending it off for repair, could you reveal in more detail what you've done to test?

Was it ever operating properly?

Is there anything that happened recently to it?

Thanks Chuck. It operated properly until last night when I was reading your tutorials (hence my questions in the other thread) and fooling around. I tried to set it to slave and it just would not work. I have 3 so I could always just use this one as the Master. I am wondering if it is worth the $125 under these circumstances

Odd... I've never heard of that happening. The first thing I'd suspect would be the switch. The foot is easily removed with four screws so you might take it off and have a look to see if there's some mechanical problem with the switch.

The other thing that comes to mind is just leaving the batteries out for while. There's a non-volatile memory which allows batteries to be swapped without loosing settings and leaving the batteries out will force a cold reboot which might unstick it if its a firmware glitch.
