p.1 #1 · Advice wanted--sigma 15-30, Sigma 14 (and Canon 17-40L)

I was wondering if anyone can give me an honest, grounded opinion. I need to get a little bit wider--and unfortunately price is definitely an important consideration. Currently the widest thing I have is the 17-40L. I could fit either the Sigma 15-30mm or the Sigma 14mm into my budget. I am hoping that some of you out there could have used one or maybe even both (that would be especially helpful) and tell me which you think is the better. What I am looking for is the best center sharpness, resolution, contrast, and I do expect the edges to be weak, but I at least would not want them to be horrid. This would be on a full frame, not crop sensor. And of course, if anyone feels that that the 14 and the 15-30 at 15mm are just horrid compared to the 17-40L at 17 and that I should find some way to make do with what I have, please feel free to express that viewpoint also. I think I have ruled out the Sigma 12-24 because the online photos I looked at didn't seem so hot--but if anyone feels that is in fact a better option, let me know that also. Thanks a bunch for any input.

If you are willing to stop down to f/11 or 16, I think the 12-24 is the best option...if you are using a 5D. A 5D2 might totally outresolve the 12-24.

What body are you using?

Yes, I am using the 5d mk II. I looked at photozone.de, the center resolution numbers for the sigma 15-30 are very high, so that's one of the reasons why it appeals to me--although obviously, everyone will point out that the numbers are just theoretical, the proof is in the pudding, as they say. But I came across some image comparisons at the 16-9 website, and it looked good--better than the 12-24, which is kind of why, as you suggested, I was figuring the 5d mk II might really outresolve the 12-24. But yes, I will probably be shooting at f8 or 11, so no problem with stopping down (I assumed I would have to anyway with those lenses). Although that seems like it is the optimal range for the 15-30 also. The 14mm, since it is a prime, in theory should have pretty good resolution, but some of the images I have seen online are not so sharp--maybe what you are really getting is the 2.8 rather than the sharpness. Anyway, please, any real world experience you have had with any of these lenses, let me know--you know, one problem I have when I look at the online reviews is there are people out there who are wiling to sing the praises of anything, so it's hard to get a sense of context. I think I could probably shoot a photo through the bottom of a Coke bottle, and there would be someone, somewhere, who would say, "wow, sharp as a tack!" So like I said, any real world experience, or if anyone would like to share some photos, and tell me what they found positive or lacking, that would really be appreciated.

I've used the lenses you list, except the 14mm Sigma. A friend who I trust says it's marginal wide open, I didn't get the full story of how it performs stopped down. I had a 15-30 EOS mount, worked okay...but I preferred the 12-24 on FF. Also got the 15-30 in SA mount, which I still have, but would probably also give up if I could find a 12-24 in SA mount. Either the 15-30 or 12-24 should do better than the 17-40 stopped down into the f/8-11 range, but I have not compared any directly.

I use a Sigma 12-24 on a 5D. I tested it against the very well respected Nikon 14-24 f/2.8 and the less well respected 24 f/3.5 TS-E. When stopped down a bit, I found the center sharpness of the 12-24 to be surprisingly comparable to the Nikon and pretty much the equal of the 24mm. I quite enjoy the 12-24. The field of view difference between 12mm and say 14mm or 15mm or 17mm is quite large so if you're looking for really wide, I'd certainly consider the 12-24. Also, only from what I've read, the 15-30 is not as linear correct as the 12-24, which I find fairly distortion free. I use the 12-24 for fun perspective and really wide landscapes as well as some architecture work.

Have you thought about renting to try them out?

Cheers!

Renting them--hmm, no, honestly that had never occurred to me. I didn't even think that there might be shops renting Sigmas, I guess I would have figured they mostly just rent the Canon and Nikon stuff. Thank you for the suggestion, I will look into it.

Unfortunately they don't usually sell Sigma in the shops around here. If they did, I would just go in and try them out.

I rented the Nikon 14-24 to try it out. Found out I could live with the Sigma a little bit longer - saved me some serious cash Of course, I still lust after the Nikon - it's just so dang good.

Anyway, looks like www.lensrentals.com rents the Sigma 12-24.

Good luck!
