I expect canon to introduce Prosumer Body with x1.6 and 12 Mpix.
In simple words: 40D with 12 Mpix.
Welcome to the world of 45D.

Going back in MP and in numbering? Very unlikely.

Happy shooting,
Yakim.

Why introduce a 45D when there already is a 50D? Canon has already made it clear that they are still interested in continuing the megapixel war and will most likely keep producing bodies with higher MP counts.

Well, they did bring out the XS (1000D) 10.1mp after the XSI (450D) 12.2mp

Yes, the first in an entire lower-level model line. With respect to the 40D and 50D, that camera already exists with a 12 MP sensor-- the 450D. The OP is engaging in wishful thinking.

How about 50d Mark II? (50D that performs as specified)
I shall wait until that moment and in the meanwhile I shall be happy with my new
40D which I expect to receive today.
I predict that once all the 40D are gone we shall see that move (50d II)
so in a way I feel like helping this process.

I am not sure they can really increase the pixel density anymore. Something has to give... maybe a compromise at 1.4X.

And apart from wishful thinking, what is your prediction based upon?

Happy shooting,

So you're dissing a model you've never owned with an older model you've never actually yet owned, hmmm good thinking

Cant see another XXd for a while 50d only just out and the 40d still being in the line up. possibly the next consumer body to get updated will be the 450d (probably as I just got 1).
I think the xxd line should end up with a mix of the 5d2 AF & 40/50d AF ie a 6.5fps 12 or 15mp crop body with 9 cross af points with a few center assist points like the 5d2

This would be suffient for most uses but far enough below the 1 series that the 1 series would still be attractive to its potential buyers.

Few weeks ago I was shooting at White Rock in Dallas and met a fellow Photographer
who was using 50D. So I gave him my Flash Card and asked hime to shoot few trees.
I later repeated the same shots with my 1D Mark IIn.
I was shocked to see how poor the 50D JPG were as much as details.
Canon jumped too high. Give me 4 Mpix with High IQ and I shall accept it,
Give me 15 Mpix with Low IQ and I shall reject it.
I read several posts in this Forum: "My 40D has better IQ"
Am I missing anything?

The posts saying "my 50D's IQ is better than my 40D's"?

Now as it happens, I love my 40D and the 50D leaves me pretty cold, but I really find that this kind of "selective reading" irks me somewhat.

The truth is, a lot of folk prefer their 50D to their 40D, and just because you choose to ignore that fact, it doesn't make it go away...

I am a happy 40D owner, playing with a 50D as we speak. I can't say (yet) that I love everything about it, or if I will. But looking at JPEGs from both cameras in DPP and magnifying leaves absolutely no doubt as to which one captures a lot more detail. 50D AFAIK

As to IQ, I find that both cameras "read" the light quite differently in terms of dynamic range. It is very far from a "similar and simply better" situation. More like different settings/behaviour. Not made simpler by the new parametre available on the 50D. I need to put in a lot more research before I can make up my mind and offer an opinion. This could explain why some very capabe owners heartily like their 50D, while others, no less credible, returned theirs....

I'm 100% guilty of this but I remember one of the complaints about the 40D was that it was only 10MP when it came out (same as 400D). Now that the 50D leap frogs the 450D, we're all still unhappy because of poor high ISO performance

There's no pleasing us

...I thought the 40D Mark II was a package kit with two refurb 20D's in it. I got this info from a very reliable source that I can't reveal.

They did come out with the 430EXII after they 580EXII, but then again, flashes are different than bodies...

Downsample and sharpen the 50D images when comparing them to the 40D images.

Don't compare 100% crops from both cameras.

Mike, I prefer to compare A4 prints, since that is my "normal life" output, and it also avoids biasing the comparison, as you rightly outline. There might be greater differences with 200% crops in DPP, or A3+ prints, but I will upgrade only in return for an improvement in everyday IQ, not if it is restricted to "marginal" shots, views or prints.
That being said, if indeed there is a point of diminishing return in increasing pixel count, the possibility of a 45D is attractive: lighter files, higher fps, maybe even better ISO performance, I think the OP has a point. What I don't see on the other hand is how that camera would be any cheaper than 50D. It would be more a case of splitting the product segment, as they did with 1D and 1Ds, and which they have right now with 40D and 50D, until they pull 40D out of production.
What I see as more likely is giving 50D video, but that is just my 2 cents.

If Canon had just done the sensible thing and put the 450D/Xsi sensor in the 40D this would all be moot. The 40D body is great, fast, well built, it just needs a slightly better sensor to be virtually perfect IMO
