p.1 #1 · 3 pictures before and after editing with NIk software, Was it worth the editing?

Before I normaly used HDR to get more color and avoid getting the bottom of a picture underexsposed, while the skies were fine, or otherwise.

After getting the NIK software, I tried to adjust the photo there, and got these. What could have been better, or did the edting make the pictures better?

Hi Christian,

Welcome & Happy New Year!

I've played with the Nik demo plugins for NX2. Frankly, I think the non-Nik versions are better than those you processed. In #1, it looks as if you used control points which resulted in 3 very blue areas, #2 is better, and in #3 the sky and clouds look very flat, at least the versions at the posted link.

From the link, I see you use Nikon gear - I've taken the liberty of reworking the three images using NX2.

#1 uses a gradient to darken the sky and I selectively sharpened the shoreline;

#2 uses the LCH curve to selectively darken the sky, control points to put some color into the brickwork, lighten/restore color to the trees, a gradient to darken the immediate foreground, and the high-pass filter to selectively, and slightly, sharpen the building

#3 uses the LCH curve to add some snap to the sky, and then the quick adjustment panel to protect highlights and recover shadow detail, followed by several control points to selectively add brightness to some of the areas still very dark.

Personally, I prefer NX2 but I'm sure CS3/4 wizards can do the same plus much more with it.

If you object I'll pull the images.

I found the Nik plugins really powerful tools, but I could never justify the expense for what little I do - really cannot justify what I have now. The one Nik tool I would buy, should it ever become available for NX2 as a plugin is Silver Efex Pro - really kicks butt for B&W, imo that is.

anyway, my 2¢

It's already 2009 in your part of the world, ours is yet to arrive,

cheers, and have a great year,

Bob

Hi,
thank you for the images...I think you did a good job, but I see you pointed out a gradient filter.
I know that I found one of those yesterday, and used it on another pictures, so myabe I'll try it more often on some other pictures I need to work on today.

Thank for your input, it was quite good to have

happy new year.
