p.1 #1 · What do I need?

Ok......I'm new to lights, I do a wide range of work moving from video to still photography and back. I've been looking at Lowell light kits. The light kits will be MAINLY for video but if I want too take some products or some portraits I'm sure I can use the kit I buy for my stills as well.

The work I do is usually for visual effects, having the correct "photography" gear isn't as important as having some decent lights at this point.

Wondering which kit would suit me better. If there's a better suggested brand please let me know.

What does this mean? Are you doing green screen, motion control, miniature/model shots?

Give me an idea of what you really do, and I can give you a recommendation.

Well right now a lot of what i do is motion tracking and compositing, in this scenario I take a 360 panoramic, and have all my lighting from the environment.

I would do this with the lights on to create my own HDR as well.

Yes green screen would come into play, as well as lighting subjects without the green screen. Basically I've been to a few small shoots, used my SLR while they were filming, and I'm into the results.

Tota-lights give a wide even spread of light. http://www.lowel.com/tota/ They work well as a flood light to cover large areas, and green screens. Nothing better for bouncing off walls and ceilings. For raising the ambient light level in a room a couple of Totas bounced off the ceiling works wonders, a nice shadowless top light.

So I would get kit #1, the Basically 3 Kit. Plus one additional Tota-light, if you have the money.

Just remember that these low power tungsten lights will work well with video, but will require a slow shutterspeed (and maybe a tripod) for stills.

Also, these tungsten lights are 3200K which is fine indoors, but not for daylight (5600k).
