I'm new to using PW's and was wondering if I could split the strobe trigger-output from the PW (1/8th Inch) using a mono-y splitter to trigger two strobes. TIA

Yes, I do this quite frequently when I need high output and quick recycle times. By using two speedlights at 1/2 power, you get the light output at or very near the same as a single unit at full power, yet the recycle time of using 1/2 power. Or it allows you to light a larger area if needed.

I've been using radio shack mono splitters for a while. I've saved a bunch of money on PWs. Just make sure the splitters work before you go rushing off to a job only to find out that they don't. About half of the splitters I've bought from RS don't work. With a few $3 long cords and splitters, you can fire a key & fill, and a background & hair with 3 PWs instead of 5. That's $360 in your pocket.

Doesn't stringing long cords between lights sorta defeat the purpose of pw's?

I don't think so; we're just trying to maximize the PW's potential.

Even though its not the sole purpose of the PW, one main purpose is to get the flash synch cable off of the camera.

Not necessarily, often when sports shooters mount strobes high in the catwalks of larger arenas, they hardwire sync cords to 4 or more lights, all controlled with a single PW receiver. There are times when old fashioned wires in combination with modern technology can mix effectively and use fewer parts to get the job done.
