Being an "L" lens you wonb't have any problems with a warranty claim in Australia, should the need arise, regardless of if you import it from the US or not. L lenses have an international warranty that is recognised worldwide, so you shouldn't let that effect your decision to purchase overseas or not. I haven't had a look at prices recently from B&H with regards to the exchange rate, so I can't say what their price would end up being, but I have purcahsed a number of lenses from them myself and have always been very happy with their service. Trekka is probably right about the warranty if the lens has a USA warranty but I'm not sure about B&H "Import" models which have no Canon USA warranty. Also, B&H don't like non-US credit card amounts over about $2500 US (including delivery). Adorama are easier to get along with in that regard. Don't forget that you'll need to add GST to the value you paid for lens and delivery, and credit cards will charge you about 1% or more via their conversion rate. You'll also pay about $70 as a customs clearance fee at the time you pay the GST. At current rates I expect that you'll pay in Aussie dollars at least 60% more than the price in US dollars. You won't do much better than the local prices at present, but the local prices may skyrocket as did some of the non-super-tele L lenses last month (by about 10-30%). - Alan Jan 03, 2009 at 02:06 PM

As a start ,they must have been purchased from an authorized reseller to get the international seller. Second, international warranties are 'limited' warranties.
