I am quite fond of my Vivitar series-1 90mm/2.5 macro lens.
It's a Nikon mount, and I use a Fotodiox-Pro adapter. Problem is, I am constantly putting the 1:1 adapter on, then taking it off. (The lens is unusable for "normal" shots with the adapter attached)
Even with the F-Pro adapter, removing said adapter is a PITA.
I'm wondering if there's any possible way to mod the FRONT of the 1:1 lens, so it has a Canon mount on it? -Then I could put a second Nikon-to-EOS on the back ot the 1:1 lens, and be done with it. This lens is good enough that it warrants at least considering such a mod.
Is this just insane, or is there any chance at all?

I take it you mean to be able to reverse the lens on the camera? If it has a filter thread then yes, you can get EOS mount reversing rings - with an EF mount one side and a filter thread on the other.

No, that's not it.
It's hard to explain because of the terminology involved:
Main lens does 1:2, as is wonderful by itself. The adapter lens attaches much like a TC, in-between the main lens and the body, giving 1:1 (but a very limited focus distance.) Both a Nikon K-mount.
Right now, if I want to use the adapter lens, I have to first remove the Nikon-to-EOS adapter from the main lens, which is a minor PITA.
I want to be able to attach / remove the adapter lens, without having to remove my EOS adapter from the main lens. So, I would like to modify the FRONT of the adapter lens so it's just like the mount on the Canon body.
Probably impossible, but it wouldn't surprise me if someone here has actually DONE the impossible.

I understand your problem but I think it would be easier if you just get yourself a OM version of this great lens. Then you can let the adapter stay on the camera and change between the lens and the 1:1 adapter.

SRB could probably make you one - you'd lose infinity focus because there's no way the EF mount will fit inside the Nikon mount, but I guess that wouldn't be an issue for macro work.

No, neither tube is the correct length (which is 45mm for a 90 that does 1:2 natively). You'd need to stack a EF25 and Kenko 20mm tube to get the right length.

Interesting. I never thought of using tubes with this lens. I have a set of Kenkos.
- but won't that radically change DOF, or focus distance, or focus depth, or SOMETHING? Surely there's a reason that the geniuses who made this lens chose to put optics in the adapter?

The optics in the adaptor adjust the optical formula to optimise it for the 1:2 to 1:1 range vs whatever the base lens is optimised for (likely either 1:10 or 1:4). Tubes will degrade the quality vs the 1:1 adaptor, but perhaps not by a significant amount.
Note that a 90mm 1:2 lens needs 45mm of tubes for 1:1, the best option for the Kenkos is 46mm with the 36mm and 12mm tubes, getting you a hair past 1:1

That's not a terrible idea!
-a lot cheaper, too, as far as the adapter part. One cheap one vs two expensive ones.
