Alex_B Offline Upload & Sell: Off p.1 #1 · Reindeer in flight - controversial image Merry Christmas everyone (or happy holidays for those who do not celebrate Christmas)! This is my first post ever on this forum, so I am not sure if I am posting in the right sub-forum/category. I would be happy to receive some feedback on this image: (reindeer in Swedish Lapland) My intention was to give a feeling of flight/fast motion and still show some of the surrounding landscape (trees in the background, autumn colours, ...). I know what I myself think of it, but I experienced some very controversial comments on this image and it seems to be very polarising. Hence I am curious about your comments/critique . The "snow" came out a little to orangish. And Rudolphs nose could use bumping up the red a bit, as it is hard to see. But I usually do not mess with my subjects that much As for the blur, they were all moving in different and changing directions, so you cannot get all the faces sharp in panning. The only way would have been a shorter exposure then (this was 1/15 s). I might try next time I get a chance. Dec 25, 2008 at 02:21 PM

It delivers an almost iconic cave-painting portrayal at the same time that it brings it all into the present - realistic and tells a story. For me, however, there is just too much blur. I'd either like to see more of the reindeer sharper, or more of the landscape sharper. I think the challenge is the panning and shutter speed. Personally, I find the panning very difficult to get right. I suppose you could use a very high shutter speed, light allowing, then work in Photoshop to add some motion blur or blur of the foreground/background. Scott Dec 25, 2008 at 09:42 PM

I spent almost 2 full days out in a tent just for some reindeer images (some very different from this one). Right now they are almost 2000 miles away from my current location Bifurcator ... hehe, thanks, we know each other from a different realm Great to meet you on this forum The shot was not accidental, but I had to be quick to get my camera up and set aperture and "shutter speed" according to what I wanted when those reindeer started running. So I might not have hit it perfectly. sbeme (Scott) ... OK, it seems to be as I thought, the image really divides opinions and you are with those saying too much blur. Thanks for your suggestion of doing things in post processing, but this is not my style. I work on contrast, might dodge and burn a bit where it is needed, but I never apply any of that high-tech post processing. Don't get me wrong, but some people draw with a pen, others paint in oil, and others again use water colours Still your thoughts are appreciated Dec 25, 2008 at 09:59 PM

sifpandor Offline Upload & Sell: Off p.1 #9 · Reindeer in flight - controversial image I love the colors, unfortunately by having so much motion blur, my eyes are not able to find a place to rest in this image. Looking at this makes me dizzy. I would prefer to have one of several things happen, either have something appear still (ideally for this image that would be the background) or perhaps a very tight crop of some parts suggesting reindeer, which would let the mind work the rest out. As it is now, two reindeer heads stand out as they are unblurred. At least in large print they stand out. I would not want to give up that.
