p.1 #1 · Will 35mm 1.4L be upgraded next year?

If anyone has a crystal ball I'd be grateful if they could let me know if it is likely.

Had a go with one today...what a lens!

1. No one knows and if anyone does know, he will be under NDA and would not be able to say anything.
2. My personal guess is that the chances are slim as it is known to be a great performer. Other WA that need improvement are the 28/1.8 USM and 20/2.8 USM which are just so-so. Other possible candidates are the non-USM primes 24/2.8, 28/2.8 and 35/2 – to get USM. Personally I'd like to see a 50/1.4 with ring-USM and IF design and improved IQ.

Happy shooting,
Yakim.

I agree, because it is such a good lens, it is unlikely that it will be upgraded.

Did we not have such a good 24 f1.4 L with absolute no need for upgrading?

I think so, this lens doesn't perform well on modern bodies with micro adjustments. I sold mine and no regrets, I am getting better shots on zooms with mk III.

It would be nice if all of Canon's primes were upgraded with IS. I drool at the thought of a 85L with IS

I'd drool for an 85L that would focus fast. Although I plan to get an 85L at some point, i won't be selling my F1.8 version until the L's will focus fast enough for action.

The 35L is probably scheduled for an upgrade next year. Not a rumour, just a hunch....based on design/fabrication/application homology with the 24L.

That would also complete the revamp of all key WA lenses and then up to and including the normal and short telephoto: 14, 16-35, 24, 35, 50 and 85. All new/Mk II's , all spec'd to new Canon standards.
The 24-70L Mk II should close the circle...round up the wagons.

My personal guess is that the chances are excellent as it is a reliable seller, and now massively "underpriced" (in the US) compared to their new 24L-2/85L-2

Get 'em while they're cheap

My crystal ball tells me that the economy will change for the worse before it gets better but I didn't see the 35mmL anywhere there . Well, since you were impressed with the current version, why not just get one to call it your own ?

I'll go against popular opinion here, and say that the 35L is very likely to be updated in 2009. It's the only non-specialty L prime lens remaining that hasn't been updated in the past 3 years (excluding telephotos).

14 f2.8L to 14 f2.8L II <--- 2007
24 f2.8L to 24 f2.8L II <--- 2008
35 f1.4L
50 1.0L to 50 f1.2L <--- 2006
85 f1.2L to 85 f1.2L II <--- 2006

The 35L in its current state is already a great lens, at a reasonable price ($1150 USD). If it were to be updated in 2009, expect Canon to jack up the price to around $1700 like they did with the 24Lmk2.

That I would not consider an upgrade, nor an update, nor a succession.
Those two lenses are very different. Considering its complexity, cost and potential market size, Canon is not likely to introduce another f/1.0 lens any time soon.

In fact the EF 50 f/1.2L design doesn't seem to follow the FD 55 f/1.2L ( FD 50 f/1.2) tradition either, although it does fill the same market/application niche.(I think someone at Canon might have gotten overly creative in minimizing the EF 50 f/1.2 lens manufacturing costs. )

Lens is good but not on any bodies I own so I sold it. Especially it was not as good on 1D mk III, microadjustmenst and Canon calibration didn’t help.
I wish it will be upgraded since it is very useful focal/aperture. Would be good to have weather sealing too since I am using 1D body and prefer all my lenses survive rain and other weather extremes.

If it does come out, you can bet that the price will go up quite a bit.

For those hoping for lower priced non-L primes, consider Canon's last releases:

2000: 100/2.8 macro
1999: 65/2.8 macro (MP-E65)
1995: 28/1.8
1993: 50/1.4

Like it or not, all future primes are likely to be L-lenses, high in quality and price. The budget market is zooms only. You might not want to hear this but, that would be the reality I think. Note, I am not saying that this is fair or not, or it should be like that. You can always dream, but eventually you have to wake up!

They did upgrade the 85L and most people were totally thrilled with it at the time... and since the 85L II and 50L both were designed to improve bokeh, maybe Canon will address the less than stellar 35L's bokeh...

Just out of curiosity, do you have any examples of the less than stellar bokeh?
