p.1 #1 · Anyone going to keep both 5D versions now?

I can't believe people are selling 5D's for $1200. I plan on getting a new 5DII, but I'm sure as hell not dumping my old 5D for that cheap. I'll just hang on to it for that amount.

Might make a pretty good backup body if you ask me!

+1 to the "sold it and sad" group.

I bought the 5dmkII, kept 1DII and traded the 5D for a 50 1.2. I am pretty happy, though I forgot how much I disliked the raw 1DMkII files when I only had that and my 10D to shoot with. Now that the 5dII is here I have no regrets since the 1DII makes a great backup to a 5d. I wish it were a 1DIII....

well, i was going to keep the 5d as a backup to my 5d2 but i figured i didnt need two full frames.

i dumped it and got a 40d as a back up and used the rest of the money for glass

i like having the extra length from the crop body for those moments when you need to get the reach.

also, changes the focal length on the rest of your lenses!

For those who also have a 1DMark? or a 1DsMark? it makes good sense. But if the 5D is your second camera I say keep it. The 40D is a great camera if you cannot afford more lenses and want the extra crop for your long lenses.

I haven't decided yet. I really, really love my 5D. Maybe after the MkII has proven itself to me a decision will have to be made on the 5D. It'll probably do backup work for me.

I would keep my 5D but I also have a 1DsmkIII. I have no need for 3 canon bodies. I would prefer to sell the 5D but may consider the 1DsmkIII

I'll be getting a 5D classic when I can afford it in a few months to act as a 2nd body.

There's always some variation of this sentiment that occurs with every new camera release. But you gotta ask yourself if you really need a 5D as a backup, because if not then better to sell now at lower than what you think the 5D is worth than to sell at, say, a year from now for much, much less. "At this price I'll just keep it," is only a viable strategy if you actually need a 2nd body. Otherwise, it's better to recoup what you can from as early a sale as possible, because the price will only go down as time goes by.

For some the funds are used for purchasing the new camera or some new glass. Yeah it is great to have backups, but how many cameras can we shoot at the same time? (can only look through 1 viewfinder at a time) How often does your camera die where you need a backup, (I have 2 camera failures in the last three years (A 1V film camera and my modified IR camera, the 5D just kept on shooting).though when it fails it is nice to have a backup.

I got rid of my 5D and just received a 5DMK2. As much as I love the MK1, I am very happy with the MK2. I also have a 1dMK2, so the two MK2s make a great pair of cameras.

The 5D is still a very good cam... I sometimes regret selling mine (for a good price though). It would have made a perfect back-up/travel cam for my 1Ds3

dont understand this theory. If you crop a 5d2 file to the same as a 1.6 cropper then you end up with 8mp. the difference between 8 and 10 is not much. added to that you have the chance to recopose in the crop (you dont have to crop to the middle)
If you want the speed then fine or swap the 5dclassic for a 50d or 1d2

I had 3 5Ds coming into the 5D2 release.I sold one a couple months before and replaced it with a 50D. I decided I wanted more than the 50, and traded it for a MKIII. I sold 5D #2 just as the 5D2 was released. 5D #3 will be staying on as a backup.
It is way more camera than the 50D and worth much more (to me) than the prices on the B&S.
I traded in a car a while back and only got 3K for it. I knew it was worth more than that, but didn't want to go through the hassle of selling it. As I drove past the dealer the next day, I saw my car on the lot and thought, it's certainly worth more than 3K! I turned in and told them I wanted out of the deal. They were a little antsy, but then I said the trade-in part of the deal. I wrote them a check for the 3K and my son is still driving that car today, 5-6 years later.
If I saw a 5D for sale for $1200, would I buy one, in a NY minute. Instead I just kept mine, hell the custom functions are already set!

I'm keeping my 5D. I have both in the bag. One with wide angle and one with portrait lens. Depending on need I pull one out and shoot. I don't consider the 5D to be worse than the 5D2 or vice versa.

I have a young cousin that is into photography, and I'll probably just end up giving the camera to him. He can't afford to spend $1200 on one, but I'd rather just give it away to him than sell it for what I think is too cheap.

I have a 1D Mk II N and a 5 D in my bag. I consider the 5D to be my primary camera body. If I decide to replace one of them with something newer, it won't be the 5D!

I plan to either keep mine or trade for an 85 F1.2...

Too bad the grip doesn't work on the 5D2.

I have other bodies for backup, but would be happy to keep my 5D too.

Very hard to go back once you see just how different the 5D2 is.

Best thing to do is to remove the body cap, place it on it`s back and use it as an ashtray probably still get less dust on the sensor than using it as a camera

Glad to see that there are others who do this.

I get attached to gear that has worked well for me and I much rather give it for free to someone who will really appreciate it, than to sell it for less than I feel that it's worth. I have given away a laptop, two compact cameras and some other stuff. It makes me feel good to know that it's still in use and appreciated by someone.

I'm in a slightly different crowd, as I won't be buying the 5Dmk2 for at least a year.

I bought the 5D classic at a nice price recently.

Once the 5D prices stumble below 1000$, or at 1000$, I'll consider taking the loss on my 40D, and buying another 5D. And when I get an MK2, I'll probably keep one of the 5D's, if not both.
