p.1 #1 · A trip to the beach

Hi all,
Looking for critique on a couple of my favorite shots from this fall (e.g., any thoughts, suggestions for improvement in PP, composition, etc). All three taken with my D200 and 16-85VR at Rehoboth Beach, DE:

1. Sunset on the road home

2. Old pier on the beach

3. Nighttime boardwalk fun

Thanks for looking.

p.1 #2 · A trip to the beach

Hi Steve,

I like all with #2 and #3 being favorites.

Could you post Exif on #2? The slow exposure re waves produces a nice result - not too little, not too much. I've tried a similar composition on the Chesapeake Bridge-Tunnel fishing pier - not nearly as successfully as yours.

#3 - I find I enjoy this type of street-scene, if you will, since I cannot seem to bring myself to try one - my hang up, I know.

Are you from that area? I spent many summers as a kid doing Rehobeth when visitng great grandparents in Millsboro - long before the growth and influx from Philly and the "western-shore".

Still have family in Milford...

regards, and welcome! Thanks for sharing,

Bob

Thanks, Bob, for the good comments. Yes, the street scene - they're always a challange for me too. They key for me is to be quick and discrete. I feel weird unless people think that a) I wasn't shooting them, or b) wasn't trying to shoot them. With that shot, I simply pretended to be shooting the storefronts and snapped when the kids ran by. They sped up thinking that they were going to be in the way of the picture, without realizing, of course, that they were the picture

With regard to #2, I had the good fortune of a darkening sky, so the tones between sky and ocean fit nicely into one exposure.

Here are the exifs:

1. f6.3, 85mm, ISO 280, 1.15(?)
2. f25, 19mm, ISO 100, 6 sec (polarizer used)
3. f3.8, 20mm, ISO 800, 1/50

I actually live in Baltimore and that was my first time in Reho. A fun town, and more than a little flamboyant.

Someday, yes "someday", I'd like to take a leisurely trip to shoot the Eastern Shore: Cambridge, Easton, Chestertown, Deal Island, etc...as well as the barrier islands - someday.

Thanks for the feedback - hh with VR except for #2?

I hear you, Bob - It took me 7 years of living in Maryland before I did a leisurely wekeend trip to the Eastern Shore. But it sure was worthwhile - it's a beautiful part of the country. The sunsets are especially gorgeous.

And yes - all HH except for 2. VR is a great thing.

Cheers,
Steve

These are outstanding. I love them and wish I could do something half as well as those.

p.1 #7 · A trip to the beach

Steve,
I want to echo the feedback above. These are each excellent images. Of the three, I think the third stands out. In part I think this is because of the still figure in the back and the contrast with the motion across the foreground. High contrast and BW really working well here.
In the first, beautiful silhouetting against a glorious sky. I wonder how if might look with a bit cropped off the bottom.
Second: I have yet to try anything like this and think you have done this well. It would be interesting to see with shallow DOF and various points used for maximum sharpness. I think you could bump the saturation, clone out the gray/brown stones in the foreground water.

i love #2 and sbeme's version is better in my opinion.
i wish there was more sky in the picture though, maybe a portrait shot rather than in landscape orientation?

just my thoughts

great work

thanks

I like #2 and #3.

#3 is very well composed. Very well done.

As #2 and #3 are good I am going to try and give you feedback on #1:

I think it needs to be cropped a lot tighter maybe focusing in on the trees more. While there is a lot of detail in the clouds I don't think it adds much to the sunset so by cropping it tighter it should emphasis it more.

I hope that helps.

1 Nice colors but for me the trees are too far away. Closer would have much more interest.

2 Nice image, interesting and with nice leading lines and horizon. For me it would be better with more details in the horizon and either more angle or less angle [its almost perpendicular but not] on the posts but quite nice.

3 is nice but would be better with their feat and not so much dead space at the top. Ideally the person on the left would not be there. All my suggestions would be hard to achieve since the people are not actors.

Good photos.
