Well been a member here for a while just looking and learning. Finally decided to put up a photo. Not the best lighting or situation. Just after her first bath.

C and C is more than welcome.

Hello Ryan

I saw that your image post has not had any comments despite a number of views by others. I also know that can be disappointing. So here are a few tips and suggestions to get the comments started for you.

My comments or suggestions below are not a criticism of you, your model, your talent or skill. I offer them in a friendly tone of voice and with the sole intent to help you with a second POV and set of eyes. If you read sincere questions and simple suggestions as "criticism" of you, then you will miss how I am trying to help you.

Of course this may be your own "style" or your own "vision" and I suppose we can assume that the images look just like they do because that is exactly how you like them. That is OK too. It just shows that there are differences of "opinion" on what looks good. IF these are exactly what you want and like, then by all means continue making your images look like that and have fun doing it. As I always say: "Follow your own muse."

Here is #5 of my Tips for a New Member to this forum (you are not "new" here, but this is your first posted photo):

5. It helps others understand your images and how they were made if you post the basic technical information about the images such as the shutter speed, aperture used, focal length used, light sources (sun or flash), etc. As this may change from image to image, post the information for each image. IF you are looking for "critique" or tips on how to improve an image, this basic information is most helpful. That way the viewer can make suggestions that "fit" your technique and tools used.

Now about your image:

My Impression: Watching.

My Simple Suggestion: Consider changing this image to BW.

I think the image composition is OK and the "focus" is good on the eyes of the baby.

For me, the light and the overall look it creates is the weakest element of the image. In short, the image looks brightly lit as one were examining the baby under a bright light. I would "prefer" to see a warmer look to the light and think modifying the light (even just the color temp) would make an improvement.

What kind of light source were you using?

My Simple Suggestion: In the future consider using a warmer light "look" for an image like this.

I hope these comments help and encourage you.

Now perhaps others will agree or disagree...but maybe....they might also add their comments to your image thread too. I hope so.

Thank you very much for your comment Steady Hand. This shot was kind of spur of the moment in our bathroom. Picture was taken with f/5, 1/40 and iso 800. I know the ISO is high but the available light was not bright enough. Thanks again.

Here is a link to the Black and White as well.

Hi Ryan,

I am glad to help.

My Simple Suggestions:

1. Use a faster lens for inside ambient light photography (try to get a f1.8 lens like the 50mm f1.8)

2. Shoot at about f1.8 or f1.4 or f2 or f2.8 for close work like this. That will give you MUCH more light going into the box (camera). That allows faster shutter speeds and lower ISO. Try to keep the shutter speed up to about 1/160 as your kid grows as they tend to move with rapid movements of hands. IF the subject is swaddled or asleep or tired or motionless, that is not an issue. But, be prepared for the motion/blur you will see if you keep shooting at slower ss.

3. Post a description of your method of BW conversion.
Reason: I don't think this conversion is the "best" for the image. This is a matter of taste (highly subjective opinion) and so it may look "perfect" to you. But, to my eyes, I see potential for this image to look very different and "better" in a variety of ways. How to see those differences? Read on.

4. Invite others here to take the original image and "PP" it as they see it, and with them providing you different "methods" of BW conversion etc.
You might be surprised by what can happen and how nice the image might look.

I hope these comments and suggestions help you.

I forgot to mention...

"High ISO" does not bother me as long as you get the image you want.

FYI: You might also consider purchasing an IS lens as it will help you if you continue to shoot using ambient light in your home...and handheld.

While expensive compared to the 50mm f1.8, you should consider the 17-55mm f2.8 IS as a possible lens. That is one I would want if I had a tot.

OK, I did a little post processing on this image. Converted to B/W, recropped to "fill the frame." soffened it a bit, and sharpened the eyes.

I like to do infants in B/W because their coloring can be a bit inconsistent.

Just my 2 cents. I like the image and especially the direct eye contact.

I am guessing you used Photoshop or something of the sort. I converted the image with cs3's black and white converter for mine but yours is my far better than the regular filter. I would like to know how you softened the image though. Thanks everyone for the c and c.
