I think all of you know the mirror problems of 5D, and this is 5D2 from HK!

Canon does improve 5D2. And unlike 5D, you can fix the problem yourself for 5D2 with a tiny screw driver!

Forgive my ignorance, but what is 'this', and what problems does it fix?

A user of 5D2 in Hong Kong bought a 5D2 for several days only. After 300 shutter actuations, he found something in the mirror box.

After removing the lens, he found a metal part, two screws in the mirror box.

Finally, he installed all of them back to the body without calling Canon.

That's all.

Ouch. All those pieces in floating around in there could have killed the shutter and mirror assembly as well as scratching the focusing screen and damaging the lense. Not good at all.

It's not a new same issue, it's the EXACT same person that the OP of this thread posted about. The photos are identical.

As I posted in the DPReview thread.. I checked the same screws on my 5D Mark II and they are tight. I think this is simply a fluke due to a missed tightening at the factory. As was pointed out in the DPReview thread, this happens to ALL manufacturers. One fellow got a Nikon D3x with the sensor misaligned. Does that make me believe ALL D3x models are trouble waiting to happen? Of course not.

Can't say that I ever have seen this mirror problem. Been shooting fairly heavily with (2) 5D's since the first week they were released...Have had the 5D2 since first week of Dec.
I'll continue to knock on wood.

Neither have I ever seen that in my babes with ruther rought way of treatment the past years. I really do not see any loose to the upper side of the mirror so maybe it is a bad copy of 5DII and nothing else.

The screws were likely loose from the factory. The slapping of the mirror box back and forth probably caused the screws to become looser. After 300 vibrations, the screws came undone and everything dropped.

My 5D2 is only 2 weeks old and about 1000 actuations. And You know what - EXACTLY same thing. I was changing the lense during shooting and something just went out of camera... The bad thing - if there were some screws - they were lost. The really bad thing - I'm living in the third world country without any Canon service centers nearby I will be able to fix it by myself if I have the screws however the question is where can I get them? Any advise?

At least your 5D2 came with a light shield plate (that is how it is called) and screws... In my case... they didn't even bother to put one in

Ok... Here is some update on my situation. I think it might be funny and even useful. Anyway. I was desperately looking for a solution - a pair of really tiny screws to fix the plate in place. In fact I organized a family brainstorm - me and my wife were looking for everything we have at home to get the screws. Even my 5 year son broght me some toy cars with small screws

BTW - screws from my old 300D wouldn't fit.

Guys, I was seriosly upset. I wasn't blaming Canon, heavens and everybody on Earth crying why it happened to me but...

And as usual the solution was under my very nose. Or should I say ABOVE my very nose? My old eyeglasses - got the screws from it and guess what? Perfect fit! 2 minutes and I have the plate back in place! While doing that I heard something dropped on the table and it was one of the original screews. It was really small. I can't even imagine how can I find something similar. Anyway - eyeglass screws were absolutely fine and I made about 10 shots just to test the camera. Perfect!

Well - will update the thread after I make another thousand of clicks just to let you know if the solution was really safe. However if you have a service center nearby - you'd better ask them for fix.

Slopy, slopy, slopy - I hope that Canon has found this out and has tightened the screws, literally and physically. Is itsy bitsy loctite a good idea here to prevent the screws from getting loose again?
