p.1 #1 · New at Weddings - Kelvin and Mardiana

Hi all,
This is my very first post, i have been trawling through these forums for a while now and at last i have decided to join up and make my first post here.

I have to put it to you guys within this forum that i have been particulary inspired by all your work and from it i have a wish to become a wedding photographer at one stage down the track. I have only been into photography for just over 1 year, having brought my first Digital SLR a canon 20D in Nov 08. But since then have been using it constantly. I will also start a life changing course in march 09 and thats a part time course in photography, which i am really looking forward to. Recently had an opportunity to shoot as a 2nd shooter in a wedding, so hope to continue building up experiance as a 2nd shooter throughout this year and at one stage down the track go solo.

Here are some shots from the recent wedding, please any C&C appriciated. My PP skills need a lot more work. Other than that i'm really glad that at last i'm a FM'er member.
Cheers!

All good but all look to be shot from a 2nd. Shooters perspective. Are they?

*Edit* you mentioned that. They are good shot. Exposure and color are both accurate. Did you shoot anything on your own, (groom ready shots etc.) Lets see em. That is the stuff that should be critiqued. The rest are shots that were posed by the first I'm assuming.

Hey Anthony, great job for a 2nd for sure! I really like your b&w conversions, especially on 1, 15, 20, and 21. If I were going through my workflow, I'd get rid of shots like 9, 22, and 23 where there's either a blink / blur issue or no real point of interest in the photo. I really like your cake shot in 7!

What a beautiful bride, you have caught her well! Not sure what's going on in 24, but it made me laugh!

It's a garter.

Good stuff Anthony. Your outside shots are well done...good colors and reflect a good eye. Many of the inside shots need some WB help, especially the last three.

Also...check your composition. You have a tendency to crop at some bad points.
For example...#2 and 5 from the original set and #1, 8, 12, 13 from the second set are cropped just above their ankles. I'd suggest either you include their feet or crop higher up. Set 2, #3...you crop out most of the flowers in her hand...it would be better to include those.

Also, set 1, #2 you cropped the front of the car and some of her dress. Those would be great things to include in the picture. So shoot wider and then crop down, if necessary.

Don't get me wrong...I love a good, tight crop and I think chopping off arms and heads and feet have it's place...but these are not artistic croppings, they just look like you missed the shot. So next time really try to capture all the important aspects of the scene.

Other miscellaneous thoughts...
#18...my eyes are drawn to the guy bending down, not the couple. I'd take this out of the set.

#14 is splendid.

Hope that helps.
Keep shooting and sharing your work.

brown_dog these points are really good to know, i'll make sure i give more attention when cropping to share more of whats going on.

I have another shoot in March 09, which i am working up towards and you make a great point about WB indoors, i really need to practice more indoor shoots with and without flash, as my indoor flash skills are terrible, but these areas i am going to work particulary hard at.

Thanks again!

Remember...on the WB issue: you can fix that in post processing. So for those last three, just bump up the exposure, fix the WB, and put into a collage.

What are you using for PP?

I'm using Lightroom 2.2 and have just installed PS Elements 6, so all in the process of learning how to use that.

I am a CS3 user...so I can't help too much on how to fix WB in those programs but they are both very capable of handling it...unfortunately, they cannot add back clipped ankles.

Keep shooting and posting for feedback. There are lots of helpful people around here.

Use the eyedropper in lightroom and click on something white or gray.

heheh thanks for that, i'm going to go get a whibal grey card today to help out with WB and may also invest in a spyder colour calibration tool for my monitor.

Hopefully that helps
