Sky might be a little overdone, but I dont have the strong reaction damongrousell has.
Is the horizon tilted slightly down right?
I think the image would be improved if the jetty didnt cross right through her in the background, if you were closer to her or eliminated some of the sidewalk.
Sharpness, color look good.
The color of the sky works considering the color of the water . . . for me at least. I don't particularly care for the horizon going through her head, but that could very well be a personal thing. I wonder how it will look after the lens distortion is removed.
I agree with the above - horizon cutting through her head is distracting. I think maybe next time place yourself lower and closer to her (or the subject whomever it may be). And stay wide as possible. It's a nice scene though and I think you could (should) go there again if possible. Could you possibly post the exif for this?
Agree with the poster who mentioned the jetty. I think the unevenness of the wall she's sitting on/angled composition of it is a little distracting, but straightening it up in PP would make the horizon uneven, I think. I really like the idea and it's an awesome shot nonetheless. I think the sky is just fine, and would even play with it a little just to see what it would look like with even more pop added to it.. not sure if any more would take it over the top though.
Well seen and shot, but I would have shot from a few steps to the left, and from a little lower so the horizon went through her back instead of her head... not sure which would be better though.
For anyone deeply interested, I consider the rule of thirds to be a simplification of the Fibonacci spiral.
in photography it's referred to as the golden mean, and I use it at times. Don't use it too often since it's a pain in the ass to frame, but the ratio is, I believe, 1.612:1
thanks for your thoughts guys. ive made some big edits - what do you think? *really* would love to clone out that rock outcrop as well as raise the horizon so that her head doesn't cut through it, but sadly my PSing skills aren't up to the task. If there's anybody here who is skilled enough and interested, I'd be happy to send you them the .psd so they can work some magic. Also, her hair is still a bit fucked up since I am a bum at photoshop.
The Jetty would be fairly easy to remove...IF, it were the same wave patterns on each side. As it is, removing the jetty would change the wave pattern on her left side making the image look fake. I don't think it would be worth the work to redo the entire image -- maybe just something to watch out for next time.
Great lighting in this shot. I don't mind the sky so much. What I do notice is the uneven line of the wall. The jetty doesn't bother me so much (though it might have been even better if it were off to the side of her). The new PP looks ok, but the loss of the foreground takes away the sense of depth. I'd put it back and straighten out the wall.
