p.1 #1 · T4 to EF or T4 to ??? to EF?

I just bought my dad a 20D, but I can't afford much right now in the way of lenses beyond the basic 18-55 or 28-90. However, he's coming from a manual focus Minolta with lenses that have a T4 mount. If I could somehow get those to mount on the 20D it would be fantastic. And beyond what he already has, ebay has several interesting T4 lenses that have very, VERY attractive prices. I didn't see any T4 adapters for anything common on ebay, so my hopes aren't very high. But it would be so darn great if he could use his old lenses on the new camera, for nostalgia as well as my wallet!

The T4 adapter he has now goes to a Minolta, which I've read can be adapted to EF with optical adapters(which destroy the IQ) or glass-less adapters with no infinite focus. I've run into these issues before when I played around with FD -> EF, so I won't be surprised if the story is the same with the T4. Anyhoo, thanks for reading this, I'd certainly appreciate any info you have on the subject.

I've never heard of a T4-EF adapter and the Minolta mount is problematic adapting to EF as you have noted. I'd suggest that you'd be best looking for an T4 adapter that adapts to one of the easier mounts to adapt to EF (ie Leica R, OM, ...) E-bay item # 370082802949 is a Leica R adapter. All you'd need is a R-EF adapter to complete the link and all should work fine.

All the T4 mount lenses has inter changeable mounts. I am not sure whether T4 mount for EOS are available... (T4 and TX are one of the oldest series of inter changeable mount..).. another option is, go for T4 mount for either Nikon or M42 mount and get the EF mount adapter for those mounts...

About the cheapest, I think you can get some very cheap lenses on eBay in M42 mount... just keep looking for lot or spelling mistake...
Or just keep browsing... I got my Leica Elmarit-R 35mm f2.8 for $40, but without cap (that sucker is as expensive as lens ).... and have 5 f1.4 lenses... each around $20... eBay is fun place

Thanks for the reply! Would that allow infinite focus?

In theory yes. There can other issues particular to a given lens that might cause an issue with infinite focus. The lenses that you are referring to are unusual and I've not heard of anyone else adapting them for use on Canon. In all likelihood there will be no issue, but the only way to know for sure, is to try it.

I recommend using a T4 to M42 adapter, with a M42 to EOS adapter. I've used this combination with a Vivitar Series 1 600/8 "Solid Cat", and a Vivitar 500/5.6 (Tokina) T mount lenses, and infinity focus was fine. I've also used this approach with YS to M42 and Adaptall to M42, on the M42 to EOS adapter. The M42 screw mount (in the M42 to EOS adapter) generally gives more a positive connection than most Nikon F adapters (in an F to EOS adapter).
