p.1 #1 · Need shutter count on 1DIIn RAW file

Hi Guys:

I'm looking at a local 1DIIn for possible purchase tomorrow, but I'm having trouble getting the correct shutter count. I can't get CanCount to read the RAW file, running XP under Leopard on my MacBook Pro. Would someone be able to lend me a hand here, please?

I've got the file available for download here:

http://webmail.ij.net/users/aperture/

Any help would be most appreciated, as I'm supposed to meet the owner first thing in the AM after work tonight. Thanks in advance.

1Dcount says:

Actuation count = 35176

RAW tag data in hex:
20 0 8968 0 0 0 0 0 3 0 0 0 0 0 ffff ffff

P.S. The sensor needs to be cleaned.

Wow, that was quick. Thanks! I'm not worried about a little dust, but I had the owner send me that file to check for scratches on the sensor assembly. 35K seems like a reasonable # of clicks to me, so barring any unforeseen circumstances, I should have a 1DIIn tomorrow. Looks like the 50D has to go, though. Thanks again, Jim.

Hi Dean, I've been shooting a pair of 1DII bodies for about a year. They both started (for me) at about 80k clicks, and they're still going strong - just getting broken in. Ciao, Jim.

The number of clicks can be changed very easy. So the count is only as good as the seller's word.

True, but so far I have found the seller to be a trustworthy guy, and he didn't seem to know there even was a way to check shutter count.

Do a test shot of plain sky at 1/8000 sec. Normal exposure and perhaps a little under exposed too. That'll show up any dragging shutter curtains that indicate pending shutter failure.

Dean - Cancount shows the firmware on that camera to be 1.0.2. I believe the current version is 1.1.2.

Enjoy the IIN. I recently was trying to decide between a 50D, 5D mk II, and a used IIN. I ended up going with the IIN and don't regret it a bit. Mine had some dust onthe sensor I couldn't blow off. I sent it to Canon and had it back 8 days later. They did an excellent job of cleaning the sensor and mirror for $30 plus shipping. It's an outstanding camera.

Hi Alan:

What sort of artifacts might I see? I took a few shots as you've described and I'm just seeing a fairly even background. I defocused the lens first, and there are some little variances in brightness across the frame, but I'm pretty sure that's due to the clouds in the sky.

Thanks, Dave. Updating the firmware was the first thing I did.

Mine cleaned up well by my usual method, which involves a LensPen SensorKlear and a Giottos blower. Thankfully, the viewfinder and mirror box were spotless, and the body looks like new. I'm happy to have found such a nice one locally, and I think the seller and I made a very fair deal @ $1750 for the body and all the original packaging and accessories.
