I have a Mens Wear Designer that wants me to shoot there next season of clothing. 55 outfits one day on a fake runway on three male models. And then 40 outfits the next day on one model on location for their website and perhaps wall size prints at stores like Macy's.
How would one go about pricing such a thing?
They are trying to cut back on costs like everyone else and highered models through CL at a rate of 400 per day per model.
Any Ideas?
Pricing is the toughest thing for me.
Secondly I shoot with 5d's. For blowing up stuff for the inside a store (assuming the exposure, the focus, everything is perfect) Should I consider renting a higher mega pixel solution?
95 outfits in 2 days is a good chunk of work, but I'm sure that you have that figured out, Prep days, stylists, coordinators and all that.
Be sure that you have 2 or 3 extra models lined up as all of the CL models probably won't show up, a half step up from CL is Model Mayhem but you might be able to get a few real models for the $400 or a bit more per day.
Either pricing it for a day rate (aka creative fee) or a per shot rate would work as you aren't going to be able to spend a lot of time per shot. Limit the use for web and instore display, if they want to use the shots beyond that you can work out additional fees.
I don't know how you work or what they expect, but consider the chance the job will run over two days, don't get stuck doing it for a flat rate. When the 2 days turns into 3 you don't want to be stuck paying out of your pocket.
5D should be fine, shooting MFDB would get bigger files, and you may want to get a digital tech to handle the workflow if you aren't familiar with the MF camera.
I don't think it would be worth the extra time and expense.
The first set of outfits are going to be pretty easy. I've seen what they did with the last photographer and once I set up the lighting, it should go smoothly.
They are taking care of stylists, groomers, I just have my one photo assistant.
It all has to be done in Two days.
They have a casting call so I will meet the models personally and help select them tomorrow.
I have quite a bit of work ahead of me. I told them i could rent a H3D if they wanted supremely large files and they seemed enthused about it. Hung out with a Hassy Rep today at Sammy's LA and learned the ins and outs of the camera and phocus software.
What would be a lower rate a day for such a job? Any ball park you could give?
Only thing I need to budget is an assistant, lighting rental ( I have some some profoto lights and modifiers but I'll probably get another pack and 2 heads.
I just have to show up and shoot day one.
Day two will be on location at a mansion provided by them as well.

It sounds like you really want to see a dollar amount on the screen. OK, $600 a day. That's $500 for you per day and $100 per day for the assistant. Editing is included. I would pass along any rental fees as well - if you go for the M.F. camera.
Glad you came to some conclusion, as the pricing could go from less than half of what you charged to 3x (or more) what you charged. It all depends on the photographer and the client.
And FWIW Bifurcator- an assistant is considered an expense or line item as is editing. Rolling those into your fee is not a good way to make money for yourself.
I think that $2500 per day plus expenses is very low. That rate works out to be $45 per shot on the first day. I hope that you licensed for website and in store display only with additional usage to be negotiated later. Even if they update the line, I would limit the usage to one year. If they are that cheap they will leave images on the website just to have content.
Imagine how long it will take to edit the selects on this project. I would definitely quote around $125 per hour on the editing. Remember to get half up front and the balance before you deliver anything. They should be good with that since they'll see images come up during the shoot. Good luck.
