I have tried the Nissin Di28 on the 5D Mark II. Mine, at least, has "issues".
On the first shot after mounting, it works. Subsequent shots are weak...like test flashes.
I have contacted Nissin, but other than an ack. to my note, I have not heard back from them yet.

Nissin engineers retested their current supplies and have confirmed that it works with the 5D2. Apparently the one I purchased in Sept '08, was old supply, with backlevel firmware.
They are sending a new, updated flash to exchange. I was more than pleased with their responsiveness.
I am confident that the new unit will work as expected, so feel I can recommend this flash to other 5D2 users. I will post confirmation when I get my replacement unit. Due to Holidays, even with Express Mail, I expect that will be at least a week.

FWIW, Canon support responded to an email about my Sunpak RD2000 not working on the the 5D Mark II even though it works on the 40D. The response said, in essence, "Sorry, buy a Speedlight 220..." This despite the camera manual's statement that third party flashes are supported. Hmph.
Sunpak's US distributor said the factory in Japan was working in the problem but any solution would appear after the first of the year. Once they have a fix they'll swap out old version RD2000 or XLF-50 units. Their response was a helpful as Canon dismissive one was irritating.

I don't know about the Sunpak but I have a new Sigma 530 that fires on the 50D and absolutely will not fire on either of the 5DMk2's we have. I was certain the flash system on the 50D and 5D were supposed to be compatible but that is not the case, darn SOB's. Best of luck but I think you are hosed.

Hi skibum,
thanks for the update. Even if you did, doubt they have an answer for you. Sent an email to my local distributor too... came back a bummer as well.
Looks like its gonna be a while before they fix the issue with the 5D2.
Honestly, I do miss having a descrete flash unit for the 5Dii, my other flash is a full fledged 580EXii, it never fails to bring out the 'popping ' eyes when bring it out on informal occasions or out in a crowd... sort of kills the joy of shooting in these sort of occasions when people shouldn't be uptight about their photos being taken!

OK, I also sent in an email to the US distributor asking about any info on a firmware update. I just found out about the RD2000 problem earlier this week when I received my replacement 5Dm2. Here is the response I got:
We should be getting it in two weeks from Japan. I will let you know when we gwt it.
Thank you,

I've send my Sigma EF 500 DG SUPER to Sigma (Germany) for a firmware update thursday last week, and just got a quote that I'll receive the flash back by the middle of next week. The Flash was approx. 3 months out of warranty and I get it fixed and mailed back free of charge. Kudos, Sigma...
The friendly person on the phone confirmed the 5D2 issue is the same as with the 50D, so the same firmware fix applies. My symptoms were erratic head zoom movement and 100% flash power on each exposure.

and remember all those people who said they were writing to canon asking them to NOT put in a pop-up to the 5-series because then they wouldn't be pros or look like pros or something silly along those lines
