p.1 #1 · I'd like your thoughts... conceptual shoot.

I had the pleasure on Sunday of doing a conceptual session with one of my favourite models. I can't reveal anything about the project at this time, but suffice it to say that she is to be a character in a dark, gothic artistic project that involves digital manipulations of the photos we supply.

I'd like the community to provide me a quick description of what you see in the mood and character of the shot and the model. I'm really looking to see if the intended character is coming through, and how the shots feel to the wide range of viewers only this forum can offer. You do not have to comment on each image, but an overall impression of the female character as portrayed through the set would be quite helpful. If you wish to comment individually, all the better.

I apologize for the watermarks... somewhat necessary evil at times.

I look forward to your opinions, and thank you very much in advance for taking the time to share them with us. Note: The male model in one of the shots - that's me filling in for a second character that is not yet available. All comments will be considered, reviewed with the other members of the artistic team (wardrobe, set, storyboarding, models, etc.) and will be of great value in developing our plan for the next session.

Hello.

Sounds like you need some "Impressions."

OK...I get the impression that she is posing.

My Simple Suggestion: avoid "direct to camera" eye contact except for specifically designed images that are direct for power....and that should be only a few (like pepper...use it too much and it loses its punch).

For fun...since you like music...I want you to start thinking "ZZ TOP" theme song (melody) with the following comments. Start now with "She's got legs..." (cue music).

Second Observation: She has legs. Show us how she uses them.

One of the outfits has attention grabbing holes in the leg cover/stockings. Put her in a position to use those legs (not squatting) and so the legs the contrasting holes become a strong visual element of the image. Avoid black background if possible.

Observation: she has hands. Show us how she uses them. (sounds familiar eh?)

Suggestion: put some faux nail tips on those hands so they seem "sharper" and lengthen the fingers (short nails just don't go with the "goth" "vamp" image). Press on nails are cheap and effective props.

Observation: she has lips. Show us how she uses them.

Suggestion: Use appropriate darker lipstick to define the shape of her mouth and lips.

Observation: she has arms. Show us how she uses them.

She has nice arms. Let us see them. Whenever possible use her arms to convey power and action and control (thinking "vamp" dominating man here). So...show us the arms and not the shapeless blanket looking cloth. Drape her creatively and expose her assets (arms and legs).

Finally...don't let the model assume the same head "tilt" in all shots. And...work on the facial expressions to convey more than one expression. Practice with the eyes and then add the mouth. Turn her head some and have fun.

And...(another one!)...avoid seated poses and no "squats" either. Bring the victim up to the model not model down to the ground.

I hope these Impressions and comments/suggestions help you in your project. I imagine it will be fun as the model looks like she likes to dress up and have a good time with image changing. So...lots of potential.

I just noticed this nice post has had 100 views by others and not a single person left a comment or tip or impression

To the FORUM:
This is a really coool (ghooollish) project. Sounds like fun to me. And the original poster has asked for impressions and suggestions...how nice is that? Start typing!

Oh yes....

Here's another tip: Avoid black backgrounds.

To show "shadows" you need to have tonal differences. Think "shadows cross figure against a medium to dark gray background." IF you use only black, you won't be able to easily show shadows. (Steady's Cinema Trick 101).

Also...try using "tungsten" lighting instead of flash so you can get a "fire/flame" look going. I hate "dungeon scenes lit by daylight/flash temp lighting." THAT would be mucho amateurish.

Ill give her a go... so to speak.

1) Dark experienced maybe a bit bossy or confident not to be messed with maybe a "hot goth barkeep" not sure what to think about the cape

2) No connection on this one

3) Mysterious intense experienced touch of sultry

4) Put out a bit (irratated), like someone walked in while dressing... a bit shocked... matriarchal

5) Old world rather dressy but slightly common

These are the comments that first come to mind... but they are influenced by my reading the word "goth" in your intro or maybe would have had a different meaning in some cases.

Having read that there was a connection I am baffled to what it would be, I would like ot hear a little more about the concept in that if your intended viewer would know that this relates to XYZ then they may make total sense and flow together but as it stands other than the flavor of the subject they seem fairly different.

Hope it helps !!!!!

Burk got it...I missed it.

Burk is right on with giving the Impressions....

My mistake was offering "tips" and not impressions....(you would think I would get that difference right )

Here goes:

1. Vamp waiting for a drink at a goth bar (relaxed and casual vamp off duty/work)
or "Vamp checking out the next vamp." Or..."Thinking Vamp."

2. Massage (I don't get any sense of "spooky" or "goth" or "horror")

3. Inquisitive or "What?" (as in listening gesture)

4. Cemetery encounter with a guarded woman (spookiest so far)

5. The "Innocent" maiden (potential victim?)

Wow Steady! Thank you so much for the suggestions - and for your impressions. This is a new realm for me, but the project has so much potential that I had to get on board when I had the chance. I'm meeting with several people on the design team - hair, make-up, models and we'll be talking to the artist that is building the project via web conference. This first set produced some rough (and I do mean VERY rough) poses, looks and lighting concepts for our final shoot, which will be taking place in a burned out old resort on a mountain. The designer is looking for a post-apocolyptic foundation for the setting, and this is the best we have in the area.

The set will be VERY dark, with only limited (and most of that reflected) light coming into the structure, so I have to design lighting that will play with the models to highlight the characters as he wants them to appear. The expressions, wardrobe and other design elements will all be planned and discussed before we venture to the site. We'll only have about 2 hours to pull off the work we need to complete before the light is gone. I'm telling them we might need 2 sessions.

Anyhow... your suggestions are welcomed and appreciated and I'm sure will help us to make the final product that much better.

And Burk - Thank you very much for your impressions. You confirmed my thoughts on a few of the images and as I look at them (for the 50th time or so) and make my notes, I read these impressions and re-evaluate what I see and what others see so that we can fine tune for the final shoot.

This is a HUGE project for me, and I'm VERY thankful that I have access to such a supportive community as this to help me develop, learn and grow - not only as a photographer - but in many other ways as well.

Cheers to all!

And as Steady says - Start Typing!

The only additional comment I have is that her mouth has the same shape in every shot. She doesn't have to smile, maybe sneer, but show some differences.

I am also a rank beginner, but trying very hard to learn from FM.

Jim: Thanks for taking the time to add to the discussion. Your thoughts are a valued and welcome addition.

I should explain that Heather is notorious for expressing with her eyes and body more than her mouth. It's far more subtle, and in truth, I didn't work that element as hard as I should have for this conceptual session. We'll do much better in the next one!

Cheers and Thanks
