For a light weight, compact and high quality travel kit I think I would bring this:

Zuiko 21/3.5
Rokkor 58/1.2
Contax 85/2.8
+ Nikkor 4T close up lens.

hi,
i have this great bag, but i think its quite marginal for 3 lenses, or?

i am awating my 58mm and i wonder if it isn't "to" close to my EF 85mm.

nevertheless, my carry withme, is normaly zeiss 28/2,8 and EF 85/1,8 in my Domke F-5XB.

ps: in my old bag i did remove the carabiner, and did sew a soft metal thread
(fishing gear) in the strap, to that it will be cut and stolen ...

I would have one lens on the camera pointing down. I only use one divider and in the smaller space I can fit two of these lenses put on top of each other. I always use caps so the lenses will be fine. The only thing touching eachother would be the caps.

On a recent holiday trip I took the zf 18, cx 28, zf 50 and 70-200/4 IS. I am goint to replace the MF 50mm with an AF lens though

On a FF?

Would be hard to fit the 70-200 in the bag though :-)

I think you can make a distinction between what you will travel with in your bag and what you actually end up with walking about with.
I usually bring most of my lenses in my bag - but almost invariably end up walking about with a Zeiss 28/2.8 on my 5D and a 50/1.7 in my pocket.

In Japan, my 3 lens kit was:

Zuiko 28/3.5
Rokkor 58/1.2
Voigtlander 125/2.5

I did use the Zuiko 21/3.5 and Tamron 17/3.5 a bit, but not nearly as much as the three above.

Another 3 lens combo that would possibly work for me is:

Zuiko 21/3.5 - An undeniably terrific ultra-wide
Rokkor 58/1.2 - An undeniably amazing normal
Voigtlander 125/2.5 - Possibly the best portrait/macro ever made (a bit on the heavy side, but easily worth it).

But I always like to have the Zuiko 28/3.5. And for the size and weight of it, I usually do. 21mm can often be "too wide".

I can get any of these 3 lens combos, my 5D, extra battery and memory cards in a Lowepro Orion Mini ("fanny pack"). And, if I decide to bring an extra Zuiko wide, it easily goes in a pocket or even the side mesh pocket on the Orion Mini.

Watch going too light!

I'm just back from a trip to Namibia, where I brought just 3 lenses (17-40, 70-200 and a 300+1.4). end of week 1, I dropped and broke the 17-40.

a little overlap or closeness is no harm if you have the space, and as another poster commented, what you bring on the trip is not always what you carry around with you.

I took a Contax N 24-85 and an Oly 40 when I had a 5D. One for day and one for night. These days I'm more likely to take Oly 21 f3.5, 40 f2, and Contax 85 f2.8 for light weight, since the N zoom doesn't fully satisfy 21 megapixels.

Canon 24mm F/1.4L
Minolta Rokkor 58mm
Olympus 100mm F/2.0
Canon 135mm F/2.0

I know its 4 lenses, but the coverage is great for a prime set. Sometimes I'll change out the 58mm & 135mm for the venerable 21mm and the 40mm Voightlander

CZ 28/2.0 - wide
CZ 100/2.0 - portrait
EF 200/2.8 - kid tracking tool
I could easily live with these and can walk around town with only the 1Ds and the 28mm hanging on a hand strap - no need for other lenses for what I do when I'm not taking pictures of my kid.

Yeah, sometimes AF is important to have, particularly for candids and (or of) kids.
So my kit of choice would be Zuiko 21, Rokkor, and EF 100 macro.

Realistically, my travel kit is a fair bit larger than 3 lenses:
Zuiko 21
Some form of 28 - looks like a Nikon 28mm 2.8 ai-s at the moment
Contax 35-70
Canon 24-105L (a lazy AF lens is essential IMO)
Some form of 50 - in the past the c/y 1.4, but probably the rokkor on the next one
Some form of 85/90 - probably the oly 90 Macro or the c/y 85
Voigtlander 180mm 4.0
And maybe even a c/y 135 on my next trip - I love the look of this lens.

You may think I'm crazy, but, particularly on my next trip, which will be upwards of 12 months solo, photography keeps me interested in the world around me.
I wouldn't necessarily carry all of this around at one time - the 24-105 stays at home much of the time, though sometimes it would be the only lens I'd carry with me. Other times, I'd carry a body with a small prime attached and another small prime in a pocket.
As long as it all fits in the bottom section of my Kata backpack, I can carry it. I just cut down on clothes - I don't mind getting smelly.

My standard travel kit is three lenses. With Contax Aria, I bring the D28/2.8, P50/1.4 and S100/3.5. With Leica M4, I bring the Summaron 35/2.8, Elmar 50/2.8 and Elmar 90. I always have a P&S nearby. Bag is the Domke F6.
