Not what we recognise as beeflies in the UK. Ours have a long proboscis, permanently extended forewards. Ours don't have the huge head and eyes.

Thanks. Different genus in the same family. A useful diversion, in that Anthrax (who was so unkind as to allocate that name?) seems to be the fly I photographed in Corsica this summer. The slow, short flights fit.

I tend to recognise this family by the fact they can't fold their wings down - always held in a V formation at rest. But like you I only tend to see Bombylius major here.
