p.1 #1 · Radio gig - just had to post!! | |
I am here reading all of the time, but don't post a whole lot so my name may not be super recognized. I just had to share my luck with all of you guys!
At a wedding a few months ago I struck up a conversation with the DJ and we exchanged cards. A few days later, I get a phone call from him. He is a DJ at a sports station here in town (I live in the country, but the town near me has about 80,000 people). He wanted to know if I would be interested in attending a Halloween party and getting shots of people in costumes. He said I could hand out cards and sell the shots and they would promote me on all 5 of their radio stations! It was during the week, nothing scheduled, so I said sure!!!! It went good - free food & drinks for me and my friends. Made a little bit of money and had several people comment that they heard about me on the radio. So it was good!
Next came an offer to shoot our College basketball coaches' visit to town doing an autograph session. Same thing, went good.
THEN - an email from one of the other DJs - they wanted to know if I would do their promo shots. At first I was confused as to how to price this. Then my hubby read the email and the way he read it is that the 'pay' would be advertising. I thought it would be worth a chance to see if it worked out.
The company has 5 stations - I did the promos for 4 of them. Rock/Pop, Sports, Country and Rap - talk about covering everyone! I went 2 different times and we had so much fun, went to the roof of their building (the tallest one in the downtown area), central park, and old ugly stairway, etc. It was a blast!!
I never made them tell me in particular what they would do for me. I thought whatever they did would be more than I had before, right?
The first visit - I was in the studio packing up my stuff and the DJs were on the air talking about me and they continued doing so for most of my drive home- it was totally surreal!
So anyway - I became 'friends' with all of them on facebook and myspace - I tagged them and they have posted my shots with links to my site. Let me tell you - these radio DJs have TONS of internet friends and they are mostly LOCAL!!
They made me a weather sponsor one-liner saying that I am their official photographer AND a 30 second commercial that runs from 9-6pm every weekday on the Country and Rock station, The other stations will rotate it in when the sponsors they have run out. They told me they will run continuously until someone buys the spot - then it will rotate it back in.
I have been so seriously excited listening to them talk candidly about their pics on the radio and hearing the commercials - it's awesome!!!

The commercials just started with in the last couple of days and I haven't had any jobs come from it yet - but there sure is a big buzz going around through out my small community. I have had many emails from previous clients and friends saying they 'Just heard you on the radio!!'
It's pretty cool and might be an idea for others.
