I have a friend who recently bought the D700, and asked my opinion regarding a lens for weddings. Since we use studio strobes inside the church ( during the ceremony ! ) here in Greece, max aperture is not a problem. So I told him to buy the Nikkor 28-105/3,5-4,5 AF-D, which from my experience was the best non-2,8 lens that one could use on a Nikon camera during the film days.
Any of your thoughts/opinions would be appreciated.

lots of other lenses that have been updated/created that would be higher in quality. just my 2cents

Tamron 28-75 is a VERY nice replacement for the 24-70 and has a more useful range than the 35-70, another good choice.
The 28-105 is a very decent lens (I put mine a few times on the D3), but the Tammy is better...

I'm probably going against the grain on this one, but I've gotten overall better images out of my 28-105 on my D700, than the Tammy. The one downside of the 28-105 is it's relatively slow AF (as compared to AF-S lenses).

The Tammy is an odd one because of its sample variations - some are sharp wide-open, other must be stopped down a little. The first one I bought, was wonderful on my D70 - I never should have sold it. Haven't found one as good since. It's a great value, and if you can find a really nice one you'll be in good shape.

Tamron 28-75 is the best bang for the buck lens. But you have to get a good copy. A good copy is very sharp wide open.

for info: I needed to adjust AF to get the Tammy sharp fully open. Without any adjustment, the lens was soft fully open, mainly above 50mm...
