p.1 #1 · Rare Rhino

One of seven of these rhino's alive in the whole world! She is over 40 years old and lives at the Wildlife Safari Park in San Diego. Great place to visit.

What kind of rhino is she? Are we basically waiting for the species to die out, or are there any chances of a comeback through captive breeding? I have to admit, even with a biology degree, I'm utterly useless when it comes to rhino knowledge.

I really appreciate the textures and the color scheme in this photo. I often find those to be great with rhinos and elephants.

Given the number of these Rhinos left I highly doubt they could make a strong come back. I don't think there would be enough genetic diversity with only seven specimens, plus other odds against them, such as fertility. Its sad to think like that But, on a lighter note, at least you were able to see one and photograph it That Rhino is beauty!!!

I believe she is a Northern White African Rhino. The guide stated that they did take genetic material for their "Frozen Zoo" and perhaps in the future they will be able to clone them. No cloned animals have been able to reproduce.....yet. The rhino in the picture lost her horn (which we held prior to the tour). As you see in the picture she grew one back, which surprised the guides. The horn is worth more than gold of the same weight!

Edit: Northern White Rhino

first post, so i'll try and make this as constructive as possible...

first up, cool photo - i dig how she's got her ears pinned back, like a guilty puppy!

now to business - yes, this is a white rhino - you can tell by her "square" lips. the other african rhino - the black rhino has a hooked upper lip. the white rhino uses its sqare lips to graze grass, whilst the black rhino browses on bushes.

I am delighted to be able to tell you that there are rather more than 7 white rhino in the world too - there are at least 10,000 of these guys out there in the wild, and they are the most abundant rhino species in the world. if you want to check them in the wild, head out to Hluhluwe Umfolozi in KwaZulu Natal - there are so many white rhino there, they are like cows!

Cool capture and good to know they are not in danger of extinction.

What a tragic story! I love how the skin and background are all similar tones, but there is enough contrast so that the rhino doesn't blend in. Great capture!

While I find this to be a great picture, I find the green border to be a bit distracting...

Hummmmm I though they moved a ton of Rhinos to Australia to keep them safe from poachers..... I thought those were White Rhinos.... as they're the most endangered....

I'm probably wrong but will do a search. Also - - if there are 7 left in the world. Most probably there's one male amongst them. And in that case they can breed them. Zoos just have to cooperate & most of them do.

OK - - just did the search..... Feel free to check out this link in regards to White Rhinos. There are two varieties. One critically endangered - The Northern White.

Cute shot of her.

Lil - just saying Hi & going back to her cleaning up after the wildfire storm in L.A.

Brendan not true according to the guide at the Wild Animal park in San Diego. 7 known to be alive in captivity and a few possibly alive around the Sudan(probably killed by poachers). You could call and check but the guide has been there for many years and stated this as a fact. Probably a subspecies.

Lil is correct. The link shows nine alive in captivity, but the guide stated two have died recently. The park has been the number one facility in the world for rhino births in captivity, and they are very proud of this fact, but have been unable to have a birth of one of these rare subspecies.

More accurate rhino information for those interested.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Northern_White_Rhinoceros

Sample:

The Northern Whyte Rhinoceros or Northern Square-lipped rhinoceros (Ceratotherium simum cottoni) is one of the two subspecies of the White Rhinoceros. This subspecies is a grazer and is an animal of grasslands and savannah woodlands. These animals may now be extinct in the wild as a recent survey failed to locate the only known surviving population of four in the Garamaba National Park in the Democratic Republic of Congo. Only 8 captive specimens are left in the world: at the San Diego wild Animal Park and in the Czech Republic. [1]
