p.1 #1 · Hood f/24-105 Lens?

I would like to pick up a lens hood with a little more coverage than the small one included with the lens. Any feedback/suggestions, either Canon or third party?

Thanks!!
Brian

The "small" one is necessary when zoomed wide @24mm, otherwise it would vignette the image on a FF sensor. If you use a 'crop' sensor, you can use a different non-standard lens hood. Here's a link with some good info regarding FF lens hoods & compatible 'crop' lens hoods. Keep in mind that if you use a non-standard lens hood, you might not be able to reverse mount the hood on the lens (if that's important to you). Hope that helps.

Thanks Omar!! Yes, that does help. Right now it's on a 1.3 crop body (1D2N), but have the (FF) 5D2 on preorder. That link shows another Canon hood for 1.6 bodies, so I'll probably just have to experiment with that hood to see how well it works out on a 1.3 body.

Maybe you got the wrong hood? My 24-105 came with the EW-83H and it's pretty big. Looks like a frickin' hoop skirt. Perhaps you mixed it up with one of the other 83 series? The EW-83E for the 17-40 L is smaller and fits.

I only have FF and 1.6x bodies to experiment on, so don't have a definitive answer for a 1.3x body. But if you find one, please let me know and I'll update that page.

It would have to be an EW-83x hood (for various values of "x"). The EW-83J (from the EF-S 17-55mm IS) works OK on the 24-105 with 1.6x bodies, and it may work for the 1D2N. Another option is an EW-83D II, but the bayonet mount will be a much tighter fit.
