these are amazingly sharp Phillip. If you ever choose to share your sharpening technique I would certainly bring the popcorn

Why do you bother? I know the pictures aren't any good because the lens doesn't have VR.... REALLY sharp, where'd you find those critters?

Really nice, Philip. It's a good thing those things weren't moving. For one thing, the first generation 80-200 AF is slooooow. Secondly, you might have been eaten. Really sharp and nice color though.

I just retired my one-touch 80-200 last year ... awesome glass ... and the AF wasn't much of a problem as I was weaned on MF. That's why I loved the one-touch, much easier to focus and zoom.

Nice images.

I wouldn't have guessed that you're THAT old, Phillip... Those critters must have been extinct since at least before the... uhh.... uhhh.... FM-2 went out of production?

It's no secret
I stay away from sharpening in Photoshop. I find that using NX2 is a lot smoother and more natural. That said, I don't use USM in NX2. What I do is I go to the camera settings in NX2 and fiddle with the sharpness in the shooting mode. I have my camera set to Neutral. That is what I find works best. Hope that helps

Thanks, Michael .
The lens is not too shabby on my D700. So far it has worked great for my needs.

That glass should never be retired! You gonna hang on to it or sell it?

Thanks for the great comments, everyone! I'm just glad it was overcast yesterday, providing me with the largest natural diffuser

I LOVE my 'ancient' push/pull 80-200... these are probably the sharpest pictures I've seen from it.

Sometimes I wonder why I spent $1800 instead of $350... Threads like this don't help.

I scored this one off of craigslist. Sometimes the best deals can be found on CL. Just gotta sift through all the shady people

Trust me...if I had the extra $$ laying around...I'd have spent $1800 also. I am real fortunate to have found a super duper ultra mega sharp copy . It makes up for the slower AF and lack of VR
