Sooo... I know this lens has made a name for itself. I have a 70-200mm 2.8 IS and a 28-135 IS. I do family, wedding, senior, etc. I've been thinking of getting the 50mm 1.4mm- is it worth it? Do you think it'd be a good addition to my current collection? How good is lit in ow light vs. the 70-200?
It's 5 stops brighter ;p The 50 1.4 is an AWESOME lens but the extremely small bokeh is hard sometimes to hit the focus. Takes a LOT of practice, I use it for weddings a lot but make sure your good with it first because if you miss during a crucial moment...
I agree with Steady 100%. When I try to shoot headshots with it on my 1.6x crop factor body the face becomes fat and distorted. Better to shoot wider and crop as you see fit afterward to avoid distortion.
I too am on the verge purchasing a 50mm 1.4. Any recommendations between the Canon 50mm 1.4 and the Sigma 50mm 1.4? The Sigma is much larger and more expensive, but is it better?
This is my first post. I have the canon 50 1.4 and think it's a great lens. However, I recently checked the new Sigma 50 1.4 at a Calumet store in San Francisco and am extremely impressed with the sharpness wide open. The resolution test photozone.com provided comfirms what my eyes saw in the images I shot with my camera and have developed. The lens has a 77mm diameter and is very well built. You should check out both lens before you buy. I'm hoping to sell my canon and buy the sigma.
Some models/subjects may not like to see the camera that close. I agree with Ed Peters, the 85mm is the best for most events, especially seniors and weddings.
You may not want to bump the bride cuz you were standing pretty close.
I just got mine, did 2 shoots with it to test its low light performance, the focus seems a bit finicy in very low light but that may also be my body. The bokeh is excellent! Here's a couple samples at f1.4
