I have the lens and love it! I have read reviews that it is a super slow focuser. Keep in mind this is only when using it for macro work. I have found that otherwise, it is quite fast.

Are you looking at getting the old Arc-Form Drive version or the current Ultrasonic Motor version? I have the AFD version which is a bit old but quite good.

Phocus, please also consider the EF-s60mm f/2.8 Macro for use
on you 20D. I have the 100mm too but on my xxD bodies I've always
found the 60mm more useful as it's faster focusing and has a more
pleasing (to my eye) bokeh tho it won't provide the more dramatic
separation from background that the longer focal length. The 60 is
all aces (and underrated) for portraits on APS-C bodies. Hope this
without complicating your decision

Right-o, let's get crackin'.

Time to show off a little of the magic that is the 100 2.8 macro.

It's great for BIF. (all these are cropped)

Works well on insects who are actively trying to hide from you:

as well as the ones who need to get a room:

I've always wondered if this guy was eating or if those things are part of his mouth, like Dr. Zoidberg from Furturama. Anyone know?

Love the sharpness contrasted with the bokeh:

Great for flowers too. I printed a 20x30 of this (it's from the "only" 4 MP 1D) and it looks amazing

Macros are great for times of boredom. This is a pillow and bedsheets in the background:

Here's a blue-crowned pigeon, first full frame, and then nearly at 100% crop from a Mark II.

It's stealthier than a 70-200 so put it on a quiet camera body like a 300D and you've got yourself a ninja camera:

Last, but not least, it ain't bad for portraits either!

It's a fantastic lens. Highly recommended!
