I Was hoping I could find someone with a similar experience as I am having with this combo of Camera, Lens and TC. This happens at least once or twice a day. If I leave the camera on and walk around with it waiting to shoot something it will sporadically start having these symptoms.
Playback will not work
Can't switch between AI Servo and One Shot
Will not focus.

Power on and off does not fix the problem.

I have to turn it off, remove the lenses from the body and put it back on and turn the power back on.
This is starting to get REALLY annoying.

Is this combo not made to be hand held without a monopod supporting it. I will often walk around with the camera with one hand on the grip but not for very long.

Is it possible to use Dialectic grease to get a better connection or will it jumper the different connectors and cause more problems?

Thanks for any input.

Can you try that combo on another camera and see what happens ?
BTW, I wouldn't use "dialectic grease" on my photography gear even if Socrates were to recommend it.

I shoot a Mamiya M645 300/2.8 APO on 1DII, 5D and 40D bodies, with some or no TC's. The 300 APO is 0.1 kg heavier than the 300/2.8L IS (and 0.2 kg lighter than the older 300/2.8L). I sometimes shoot it handheld, but I try not to hold it by the camera grip alone. Your problems could be caused by intermittent contact between the lens and body while you "walk around with the camera with one hand on the grip", due to slight flexing of the lens/body mount. This is the type of problem that could be fixed by a power-down reset. I suggest you try to carry it by the lens foot or a strap on the lens for a while, and see if it continues to happen.
