p.1 #1 · Cranes and a Snow Storm

Have you ever wondered how snow storms really get started? Snow storms start simply at 1st and build in intensity from there. Allow me to illustrate.....

1. Snow storms generally start with a single flake of snow....
http://ken.smugmug.com/photos/419706342_MMktJ-XL.jpg
2. Then, two flakes of snow stick together....
http://ken.smugmug.com/photos/419707084_iP72x-XL.jpg
3. Before long you get a flurry of snow and a few will even begin to stick to the ground....
http://ken.smugmug.com/photos/419708171_yTv5j-XL.jpg
4. After a while the snow starts coming down heavy....
http://ken.smugmug.com/photos/419708367_to9SZ-XL.jpg
5. During major snow storms blizzards develop into near white-out conditions....

So, that's how it happens and hope you learned something from this

A few Sandhill Cranes to round out the set....

Oh yeah Ken and I shouldn't go out and try to capture the "snow storm"? Too funny. I did head out but they didn't want to play nice. Well as it turns out it is just as well, 1,2&5 are the shots I wanted and I am sure these would have blown mine away! Great job! Really dude they are nice. Yes the cranes are nice also, I still haven't seen this in real life, it must be interesting to say the least. Very nicely done indeed.

Oh Mr ZOOMeeeeeee........................I will share the educational part of this post with my grandchildren as I am sure the visuals will make it quite a memorable experience Very well presented with pleasing color balance and crisp clean files of the snow birds

You sure took great advantage of the sandhill stage, those look so well with the surrounding colors and I do like how the raised area they were shot on lends nicely to the dropped and distant BG giving a great deal of depth and a very pleasing BG warmth. I like the framing on the last shot and as a nit it might be a titch light compared to the other perfect ones

Splendid and I enjoyed all of them!

Love your snow geese Ken. Exceptional work. That forces me back to the interior of PA in early March. Dagnabit Ken!

Great series Ken. I really like #3 cause it shows great detail on the subject geese and also has BG geese in-air and on the ground.

Hi Tim,

By the time I got out to BDA the Snow G. where there in good numbers and they gave me several high density flock shot opportunities. Unfortunately I was shooting with the 500 which made capturing the magnitude of the events somewhat limitiing. Probably should have put on the 100-400 so I could Zm out and capture more

Plenty of photo ops on the SHCs, too, in case anyone hasn't noticed

Nello,

When you are faced with shooting opportunities like this you don't have time to think about composing your shots. You draw on your experience and your instincts and just blast away. There is always at least of goose who is willing to fly into the perfect position to let you get the perfect picture

With regards to what the three were doing afterward I won't elaborate, but it concluded with a couple of cigaretts and a short nap

Thanks buddy!
