Thanks empire !, according to my memory , it was not so terrible to convert (relative to FD 55mm asph, to get infinity focus).
The apperture level is still possible and I got infinity focus as well.
This two aspect are important during every conversions what I did, which I also mentioned in my profile,

Awsome.. when i first saw the pic in your photostream i thought it was the 55mm and almost fainted at how much glass it was. But on second look i noticed my mistake :b

It sure makes smooth pictures. Congratulations!

Do you have a picture of how you did the conversion?

cheers

I converted FD 85 ssc asph Dec last year. As the most lenses what I "destroyed" in to EOS mount, never made any documentation, it remains only in my memory.
The reason is easy (price falling down especially FD mount, Minolta etc).
But I am sure, all of you can do that, it is no magic behind, what you need is different solution from one lens to another lens.
I wish some times more to enjoy every lens, I can't take all of the lenses in every situation.
If you want to have more Information , PM me

Hi Empire, may be cause of partial measure at the moment and the sensor of 5D change his shutter time ( see exif).
All the pics were taken without tripod and cause of the weight 0,765 kg is possible to get sharp pics at 1/30 s hand held.

If I have enough time, I have to open every lens to make a documentation of it ( around 40 different lenses / manufacture)

Hi cogitech/paul,

Since 5 months I 've intensively compared with different lenses, there were Zeiss 1,2/85mm 60 years, canon EF 1,2/85mm L, Zeiss 1,4/85mm MM version, Minolta MC 1,7/85mm, Minolta MD 2/85mm, Olympus 2/90mm, Tamron 2,5/90mm,
Leica R 2,8/90mm, Nikkor 1,4/85mm, Helios 1,5/85mm first version ,Jupiter 2/85mm M39 version.

BTW every lens above has its own character too.
I keep all the lenses, but canon FD 1,2/85mm ssc asph , with its high resolution and contrast still fascinated me, you 'll not be disapointed by this lens.

best wishes

Hi convert, I am newbie here and saw last night at your flickr . It seems you have a great sucsess to convert FD lenses and Minolta lenses in order to use with EOS digital body.
That is a serious amount of work converting all those lenses! Impressive !.
There are also some thread about FD conversions here, but cause of the focal length , it is not so irrelevant for me.
I 've purchased FD 1,2/85 L and would like to use on my 30D. At the moment I don't see any possibility to reach infinty focus if the rear element is mounted.
Do you have any instructions to convert FD 1,2/85 L ?.
Could you send me more information about this ?
Thanks for your helping

Hi karol from Sweden ?,
Hi zaam,
sorry, a little bit late, I was outside Europe.
As far I know, FD 1,2/85 L has different mount (new FD mount).
Yes, New FD mount are generally lighter and more compact , but internal mechanism is different (apperture linking, basic platte), compared to FD 1,2/85 asph chrom nose (breech lock), both optical design was the same and optimized at f2.
In both cases, you have to make a new lens holder for the rear element including a new apperture linkage.
Individual, I never converted new FD mount to EF mount (all my FD lenses had crom nose).
As zaam mentioned in PM, above 300 mm focal length, it is difficult (handheld) to focus every mf lenses.
Bird photography with 300mm focal length is definitive too short , mostly I use EF 4/600mm, some times an old Nikkor 5,6/600 IF ED as well, the results from nikon were great but to get sharp pics was hard.

Kind regards

Hi convert, thanks so much for the picture !
It seems for my FD 85 L, I have to make new distance holder and you are right, Zeiss ikon filter can be used for another purpose.
What kind of material did you use for the apperture linkage ?
I recently saw in Ebay so much damaged FD 85L noticeable at last element glas area, hope it is not cause of you ;-)

Hi zaam,
you might have similar problem, if you turn the distance to postion 1m, loose the apperture linkage, right ?.
I recycle some old m42 lens and can use it without problem.

I don't think so, the most member here are freak to do such a task and I never published FD 85 asph in german website.
Best wishes

Unfortunately no, you have to shave the mirror on 5D in order to get it.

On not modded FF camera it is like this

f1.2 +Canon 5D

On the next week should arrive fd 50 1.2L - it will be same story with convertion - so i think will do mirror modification, next try would be fd 24 1.4L.

I think, with your solution ( only shave the mirror 5D), you 'll have still the next problem. All the mount would never fit into the 5D body.
It is a pity; I haven't B&S account, cannot upload the pics.

Kind regards

Concerning which lens, You are saying so? If it is about 85 1.2, i have already checked and know the way how to make it on mine converted lense, everything fine with infinity when i look into the viewfinder, but of course i would never press the shutter button unless the mirror is not shaved.

Hi dimitry, plastic (corner inside on 5D body) protrude more than the mirror).
Sorry, if Canon make so much tolerance with the plastic inside, it was on my 5D.
You cannot shave the mirror including the frame on 5D more than 2mm. The mirror frame has a brake function.
I was happy like you, as I "half finished" my FD 85 last year.
BTW, I uploaded one pic infinity at wide open, see my flickr.

Good luck !

Hi dmitry, thanks for the pics.
Could you show me the original jpg file direct from your CF card ?
Meantime I have found the same file to compare @f1,2 and @f2,8 infinity.
Kind regards
