p.1 #1 · Oly 24/2.8, 28/3.5, and 35mm Shift - Impressions

Last two being Single Coated.

1. The lenses are SHARP. And by that I mean really SHARP. I never saw anything like this 1:1 previews in LR/C1Pro while using my 350D+17-40 or D80+18-70, later being much much better than the former. I'm using them on 5D.
1a. 5D - it is not just the 12mp, the files take longer time to generate preview compared to D80 10mp files.
2. Sharp - After long time I saw something near to my 6x7/645 film scanned kind of sharpness and details. I ain't complaining.
3. CA - is an issue. And not an easy one to correct. If anybody knows a way to deal please let me know.
4. DOF - how do you set (focus) these lenses. I think adapter plays an important role. I have a wobbly Ebay adapter which I may replace with a better one. Any suggestions?
For me f8 and above performance is important as I'll be using them for landscapes only.
5. Shift lens is a great fun. However mine has some very minor spots inside front element; as mentioned in the earlier thread. Sadly will be returned this weekend.

As a frequent user of the 24 f2.8 and the 28 f3.5, i concur with their performance. Wicked sharp, amazingly small and light. Their small size baffles me - how do they do it?

While high performing, they do have some interesting 'character', notably

- Low contrast. This isn't such a bad thing, their shadow detail and colour is very desirable sometimes. It's a unique look.

- Flare. These things flare rather heavily. Use the hoods, or put on an aftermarket one.

- Glow | bloom. Essentially the flare aspect, bright lights at night bloom and burn out more than on many other lenses. Often i love the look of it, but it's sometimes too much.

I won't get rid of my CZ distagon 28mm f2.8, it's punchy and bold. However, the Zuiko has a unique take on the situation which is often preferable, for me.
The Oly 24mm. This was a singe fluorescent bulb on the exterior. Look at how much it blooms

CZ 28mm f2.8. Not a direct comparison, but see how much the flare is reduced around the lights. Lots of internal reflections however. I'll set about doing a 1 to 1 test on a similar situation between them.

I love the Zuiko character. The sharpness, the low contrast, the flare even. It's a beautiful look, depending on what you're doing. And.... how do they make them so small!!!!??

Have fun

The 35 2.8 SC has the same low contrast which gives loads of room to PP.

28mm 3.5 is a great lens but a bit prone to flare - but for the money it's hard to complain esp when it 's better in the corners than 'legends' like the CZ28mm 2.8.The 24mm 2.8 needs to be the later multicoated version to give the best performance in the corners and it does have quite a bit of distortion.

May be more later. I do mostly landscapes and forest scenes a lot. All the shots at f11 and DOF setting optimized. However, a better strategy needed for better Infy sharpness.

more later

Focusing is aided by both a custom focusing screen for manual focus (ex., Katz Eye Optics) and an adapter with a focus-confirmation chip.

Your wobbly adapter is easily fixed. There are springs in the adapter that can be expanded for more tension so that the mount is less wobbly and firmly pressed against the camera mount. The (three(?)) springs have a narrow slot. With a very small flat-bladed screw driver, wedge the slot slightly wider. Test fit for tension after each small adjustment, and repeat until you get the fit that you want.

I would love to see more samples from the 28/3.5. I got mine and it is in excellent condition with case, hood and caps. For only $65 I am very happy. I have only had time to shoot a couple of test shots.

I hope to get to test it better tonight on a rundown, historic hotel.

I returned my 35mm shift, a fantastic lens but there was some fungus. I'm going to keep 24mm and 28mm for long time to come. Just need to fix the adapter issue.

As some of you guys mentioned, the 28/3.5 does flare. I got to test mine a little Tuesday night. I forgot to use the hood - to be honest I keep forgetting that I have a hood for it!

I haven't had time to look at the pics closely - really just enough to notice the flare and know that I am happy with the image quality What a bargain!

I couldn't find the original forum posting with the description and photo of how to adjust your adapter to fit. So I made my own web page with the description, and took a photo to illustrate it. I hope that it helps.

I've been looking for the Oly 24 mc for months but it does not seem to appear on Eb@y.

Is MC stated on the lens or do I have to look out for certain serial number?

Prashant, good to hear that the adapter adjustment worked for you.

weekh, for a good reference on Olympus OM Zuiko lenses, see Olympus Shared Resources - Zuiko Lenses:
http://www.mir.com.my/rb/photography/hardwares/classics/olympusom1n2/shared/zuiko/index.htm
http://www.mir.com.my/rb/photography/hardwares/classics/olympusom1n2/shared/zuiko/htmls/24mm1.htm

"Next, the first Zuiko 28mm f/2.8 lense that beared "MC" in its lens data was believed to have been introduced very latein 1984."

From memory of reading various pages from mir.com.my, while "MC" does signify multi-coated, many Zuiko lenses without the "MC" designation are already multi-coated, forcing people to look at serial numbers and/or guess, and some lenses like the 28mm/f3.5 are single-coated. There's probably no easy answer other than web browsing.
