p.1 #1 · D300 Picture Controls

Many of you probably saw my thread with photos comparing the D200 and my new D300 earlier this week. This morning, I downloaded and installed the D2X Picture Controls. I put my D200 on a tripod and shot a flower pot that still has one wilting flower left. I then put my D300 on the tripod, and took one shot in all the Picture Control modes that came with the camera, and the D2X modes. I did nothing but resize the photos, and label them. All photos were shot in manual mode and Kelvin Temp WB. I made a small gallery rather than post all the photos here. There is nothing scientific about this. It is just informational. I included more info on how I shot these in the gallery.

I usually learn something from doing these kinds of things, and I知 sure others will also, plus it gives others the opportunity to see the difference between the different picture controls. For what it痴 worth, the D300 Standard Picture Control is the one that most closely resembles the colors of the actual pot. Comments welcome

You may want to do a search... We had a good thread on this a few months back (around March time... when I got mine) Some good input from Raymond I seem to remember.

I think most of the picture profiles can find a use in certain situations, i.e. "vivid" can be really good for helping to get colours to 'pop' in landscape photos. For colour accuracy and tonality though, I'm yet to find a better profile than the custom neutral one I posted in your earlier thread Gary.

And to add to what Mark says, I like D2X Mode III for high ISO sports work (ie/quicker shutters) for getting good saturation and clean images in tough conditions. I also recommend you download the portrait and landscape modes if you do much of either.

I do searches for some things, but for something like this, I tend to learn more this way. I知 more of a button pusher than a manual reader. I typically wait 12 to 14 months before I start looking at the newest body, so I知 always late posting this kind of stuff.

I plan on experimenting with all the profiles in different situations in due time. I will be trying your profile. Not sure when I値l get to it, but I値l let you know how it works for me.

I do have a night football game tonight, and plan on trying all the picture controls. The D2H lacks saturation and good color at ISO 3200 night shots under the lights. Part of the reason for the D300 purchase was to hopefully gain cleaner shots (less noise) under the lights. Typically I知 lucky to see shutter speeds of 1/250 sec at ISO 3200. Usually slower than that, and it gets worse in the end zones. I don稚 expect miracles my first time out with the D300.

I wouldn't be afraid of trying out ISO3200 or even higher if you can't do better than 1/250th... but I will suggest you use Mode III and lemme know what you think. I think you'll be pleasantly surprised by the D300 at ISO3200.
