p.1 #1 · 50mm F/1.8 II coming apart

This morning, my wife called me down stair 'cause she saw my 2 year old son playing soccer with a "black looking ball". When I came down, he stood right there with 2 pieces of the 50mm 1.8 II in his hands (ahhzz!!!). Somehow he managed to open my trekker and picked it out (perhaps it's the smallest one in the bag). Luckily, I was able to snap the 2 pieces back together and it seems to be fine. Whew!

That happened to mine after a drop from waist height onto a wood floor covered with carpet. Some plastic pieces were snapped though, so it was a loss.

Hehe, cool! I have one of these. I always wondered what the lenses looked like on the inside... Thanks for taking a picture of it!

And if it does break, $90 isn't too bad on the wallet... Just hope he doesn't go pick out your L lenses!

Wow, that's crazy!

Just out of sheer curiosity, how did you react, and did you discipline your son in any way? I only ask because I have a 3 year old and 1 year old and sometimes have L glass lying around after a shoot. Luckily nothing like what you experienced!
I have no idea how I'd approach that situation if it happened to me.

cheapskate! get your son a proper soccer ball

Just as well he didn't fancy playing with any higher end 'balls' in the bag

Thanks for your comment, everyone.

To Bryan,
"How'd you do that?" was my reaction but I did have a good laugh, probably because it was the nifty. No, I didn't discipline him in anyway. That's what kids do .
I even got an earful from my wife for not putting stuff out of his reach.

To Ian,
My wife would kill me if I got him another ball. Here is his current line up...

It was your kids way of saying "quit taking my effin' picture, and buy me an xbox 360!"

About two weeks ago I was testing out some camera bags at samy's... My 50 1.8 was on the counter while I was putting some of my stuff in the bags. As I went to grab one of my lenses I backhanded the 50 of the counter... It busted into two pieces as well. I snapped it back together and the pictures were fine but it just wouldn't AF... I then took it apart to see if one of the connections broke and broke something the process... I can hardly get it to MF now... Either way it makes a decent paper weight. Luckily I hardly ever use it.. Though if I need to replace it I can live with 90 dollars out of my pocket.

I have 14 and 9 year old boys. I learned long ago to not leave anything of value "lying around"... Never.... Ever...
