p.1 #1 · D3 - a landscaper's friend

Just thought I would post a few shots taken with the D3. I have used it for 10 months now and it has been my general purpose camera, taken anything from low light family photos to some of my favourite landscapes with excellent details.

The following pictures are all taken with the Nikkor 17-35 F2.8

I used to shoot with Canon 1Ds2 and 16-35 2.8 and I find that photos taken with D3 are contrastier and sharper with heaps of details. Thanks for looking!

That third one really does it for me, as does the very last one with the blurry star trails. I've heard several people say they prefer the D3's measly 12mpix to the 1D's 16 or 21, who knew

With the amount of details rendered by the D3, I had cropped square a D3 raw file to 5000 px x 5000 px 300 dpi and printed to 20" with jaw dropping sharpness... I haven't tried anything larger though.

FYI, the left of the last photo was taken with ISO6400 for 10 sec as a test exposure for the second one which was shot with ISO200 for 10 min

Those are all excellent shots with excellent details.
I honestly believe that the D3 is the most advanced camera in the market at present. I have never used one but I have used the D700 and the experience has been exhilarating.
If the photographer needs the full frame and the professional body the D3 should serve him or her well.

Hi, thanks guys, yes the D3 with 17-35 is an excellent combo for landscaping. viewing at 100% of the first photo is just amazing

I honestly don't need the D3 and believe that the D700 suits me better. However I didn't have a choice back then, but no regrets as the handling of the D3 is just wonderful. I love the shutter sound!!

Zane, these are lovely images. I have never used that lens, but might just have to get one... It certainly is a fine range on FF.

Great shots all. Regarding the last, I like the left better. Star trails anyone can do, but that look is highly uncommon. Beautiful.

That number 3 is awesome. Excellent technique.

Number 4 really shows the power of this camera though. 6400 ten seconds, amazing.

The rest of the pics I really think are top notch. Well done and thanks for sharing.

As much as it pains me to admit it, I've gone the other way... the D3 and D700 files just didn't hold the same detail in 24" prints as I'm seeing from the 1DsII and 1DsIII files.

I could have saved myself a lot of money if I hadn't bought that darn HP Z3100...

Great photos, as a Canon shooter looking at making the jump how have you found the 17-35mm vs the Canon 16-35mm, currently have the 5D and 16-35mm II but if I changed would I got for a 14-24mm to go with the 24-70 or go with the 17-35mm. 14-24mm gets great reviews but I often use Lee filters for landscapes which causes a problem wrt to the 14-24mm.

I guessing that your conclusions are based upon comparing JPEGs. This only means that you are comparing the default (or user adjusted) in camera settings. Others have come to another conclusions when using RAW files. I have found that any RAW file can be adjusted to look "better" thank the JPEG (made from the RAW data)-the only question is how much better?
